Cal Poly Pomona Defeats CSUN 3-1 in Exhibition Opener

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Cal Poly Pomona defeated CSUN 3-1 to open the Matadors' men's soccer exhibition slate Wednesday night at Matador Field.
After a scoreless first half in which CSUN outshot the Broncos 5-0, Cal Poly Pomona broke the seal in the 59th minute when Paul Roger Henschke scored off a Josue Varela pass in front of the Matadors' net. Henschke increased the Cal Poly Pomona lead to 2-0 when he headed in a Max Laguna corner kick in the 67th.
Theom Samba scored for CSUN in the 75th minute from two yards out to cut the Broncos' lead in half. Zion Wagoner and Michael Blevins were credited with assists on the play. Alex Rieg capped off the scoring when he converted a Jakob Singh cross that went off a CSUN defender from five yards out.

"There were good individual performances. But as a collective unit, we have to tip our hat; they were better than us on the set piece phase, better prepared, and tougher than us on set pieces, and we have to get better at that."
