SAN JOSÉ, Calif. – After playing consecutive five-set matches on Friday, the CSUN women's volleyball team came up short in a four-set loss to California Baptist Saturday afternoon at Spartan Gym.
CSUN (0-3) was led by outside hitter Taylor Orshoff who posted her second consecutive double-double with a team-high 13 kills on .440 hitting along with 11 digs. Leah Miller also reached double figures, adding 12 kills on .312 hitting as did Tatiana Turgeon who had 10 kills on 13 errorless swings in her first collegiate start.
For the match, CBU out-hit CSUN .319 to .258 and had nine aces to six for the Matadors.
SET 1: CBU 25, CSUN 19
The Matadors surrendered the first four points of the match before rolling off a 10-3 run, capped off by an Orshoff ace. CBU would wrestle the lead back at 13-12 before CSUN rallied to tie the score at 14-14 and 15-15. It was all CBU from that point on as the Lancers would outscore the Matadors 10-4 down the stretch.
SET 2: CBU 33, CSUN 31
In the longest set of the young season, the Lancers outlasted CSUN, 33-31. After the teams played to a 20-20 tie, CBU would claim three of the next four points to lead 23-21. CSUN then claimed three of the next four to knot the score at 24-24 before a Perri Starkey kill gave the Matadors set point at 25-24. CSUN would also have swings at the set three more times, the last at 29-28, when CBU would pull away for the two-point win.
SET 3: CSUN 27, CBU 25
Needing a win to stay in the match, the Matadors overcame an early 11-8 deficit as a 9-4 run opened up a 17-15 CSUN lead. With the score knotted at 19-19, CBU used a 4-0 run to open up a 23-19 advantage. But a pair of Turgeon kills fueled a 4-0 CSUN run that tied the score and the Matadors would save a pair of match points before an Orshoff kill and a Lancer hitting error gave CSUN the win.
SET 4: CBU 25, CSUN 15
The Lancers quickly regained the momentum, outscoring CSUN 6-2 to open the final set. An Orshoff kill capped a 3-0 Matador run that trimmed the CBU lead to 12-10 and CSUN would use another 3-0 run to get within one at 15-14. But CBU would outscore the Matadors 10-1 over the final 11 points to seal the 3-1 win.
NOTES

"A lot of the mistakes we made that caused us to lose close sets we can work on in practice. They're not physical things, they're fundamental inconsistencies that we can work through. I did see some good things in the three matches this weekend and I feel positive about the potential of this team."
