LONG BEACH, Calif.---Dorottya Telek broke the school's single-game scoring record with nine goals while No. 21 CSUN notched two wins to open the 2024 season on Friday at the Beach Invite. Telek's nine goals would come in the morning game, a CSUN 16-12 victory over California Baptist. The Matadors then claimed a tight 12-9 win over Claremont Mudd-Scripps to close the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. CBU
CSUN jumped on California Baptist in the early going, scoring three unanswered goals with two coming from Dorottya Telek. CBU's Emaly Hutton helped bring the Lancers to within one on back-to-back tallies before Telek completed a hat trick with another strike. Shelby Hovanesian made it a 5-2 game on a 6-on-5 opportunity, but CBU battled back with three-straight goals. Hovanesian though closed a high-scoring quarter with a goal on a power play for a CSUN 6-5 lead through eight minutes.
Valeria Martinez hit an early goal, but the Matadors would still only lead by one for most of the period. Telek though hit two late goals and Helena Sandhagen added another to contribute to a CSUN 10-7 halftime lead.
Telek tied CSUN's single-game scoring record in the third period with two-straight goals. The Lancers though did not go away quietly, netting three goals in succession to trim the lead to 12-10. In the fourth, Telek made history with her record-breaking eighth goal on a five-meter penalty with 7:05 left to play. CSUN picked up another goal, this time from Jade Cuevas before Telek netted her ninth of the match for a 15-10 lead. Anna Pal closed the scoring for CSUN with less than two minutes to play.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. CMS
It would be a tight game throughout the 32 minutes of action against the Claremont Mudd-Scripps. Hovanesian opened the scoring before CMS evened the game at the 2:23 mark of the first quarter. CSUN though received a last second goal from Alexis Smith to take a 2-1 lead after eight minutes. After Jessica Matkovich dented the net, back-to-back Athena goals evened the match at 3-3. The Matadors would regain the lead on consecutive goals from Telek for a 5-3 lead but a late strike from Mia Adsen trimmed the CSUN lead to 5-4 at the break.
Telek continued her scoring spree with two goals to open the third period. Each side traded goals to end the period as Telek and Sandhagen scored to keep CSUN in front 9-7 through 24 minutes. Cooper McKenna brought CMS to within one at 9-8 in the early moments of the fourth period. However, CSUN took control near the six-minute mark as Telek hit the net before adding another a minute later. Tatum Scarry then got into the scoring act at the three-minute mark for a 12-8 lead. CSUN's defense held CMS to zero goals for five-plus minutes in the fourth to help put the game away.
NOTES OF THE GAMES
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"There's always some nerves for the first game of the year, but we weathered the storm and settled in nicely in the second half. A lot to work on but overall, a nice victory against CBU.
"Wins are hard to get and this one against Claremont-Mudd Scripps was a well-fought battle. We got good contributions from the roster, and we were able to control the pace despite some of our mistakes. 2-0 on the day and back to work tomorrow to prepare for next weekend's games."
