NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Junior Leah Miller had a team-high 12 kills but the CSUN women's volleyball team fell in four sets to UC San Diego in a Big West match Saturday evening at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
The Matadors (6-11, 1-5 Big West) were limited to a .151 hitting clip (42-24-119) by the Tritons who connected at a .303 hitting percentage in the 25-17, 25-23, 17-25, 25-14 win.
Miller was the lone Matador in double figures with 12 kills, hitting .348 on 23 swings. She also added three digs and a pair of blocks. Amaris Smith added nine kills (.079) and seven digs while Iye Okolo chipped in six kills (.500) and also had a pair of blocks.
CSUN served eight aces, with three apiece from Paige Sentes and Grace Stone. Katie Kolar added a pair of aces in addition to 31 assists, five kills, and four digs.
S1 – After Miller's kill pulled the Matadors within 5-4 early in set one, the Tritons claimed eight of the next nine points to force a Matador timeout at 13-5. A Kolar kill trimmed the deficit to seven (13-6) but CSUN would get no closer as the visitors would hit .448 as a team to win going away, 25-17.
S2 – In a set that was tied five times, CSUN snapped a 12-12 tie when kills by Miller and Hailey Brockway gave the Matadors a two-point lead at 14-12. UCSD would counter with a 3-0 run to take a 15-14 lead into the media timeout. Trailing by as many as three (20-17), the Matadors rallied back to within one at 21-20 following a 4-1 run. CSUN also trailed by one at 22-21, 23-22, and 24-23 before a Matador service error sent the Tritons to the 25-23 win.
S3 – Needing a win to stay in the match, the Matadors hit a blistering .385 in set three to take a 25-17 decision. With the score tied at 5-5, CSUN engineered a 10-2 run to open up a 15-7 lead following a Smith-Tatiana Turgeon block. The visitors would counter with a 9-5 run to close to within four at 20-16, but another Miller kill fueled a 5-1 run by the Matadors that closed out the 25-17 victory.
S4 - UCSD opened the final set by outscoring the Matadors 9-1 and never looked back. CSUN rallied back to within six at 16-10 following a Natalia Brandlin kill but an ensuing 5-0 burst by the Tritons extended the lead to 21-10.
