CSUN Drops Four-Set Decision to Cal State Bakersfield

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Amaris Smith and Hailey Brockway combined for 36 kills but visiting Cal State Bakersfield held off the CSUN women's volleyball team in four sets in a Big West match Thursday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
After dropping the first two sets, the Matadors (7-13, 2-7 Big West) won set three (25-16) before the Roadrunners pulled out a 25-22 win in the fourth set.
Smith led CSUN with 19 kills, hitting .372 on 43 swings. She also added two blocks in posting her best offensive match since putting down 20 kills against Portland on Sept. 20. Brockway added 17 kills (.273), seven digs, a season-high four blocks, and one ace. Setter Katie Kolar notched her team-leading 11th double-double with 36 assists and a match-high 16 digs.
The Matadors had a sizable 11-4 edge in blocks but Bakersfield out-hit CSUN .267 to .199 and had eight team aces to four for CSUN. The Roadrunners also out-dug the Matadors 60-44, with CSUN's Paige Sentes also reaching double digits with 10 digs.
S1 l CSUB 25, CSUN 19 – In a tight opening set, the visitors owned a series of two-point leads early in the set before CSUN scored three straight to take its first lead at 10-9. A 3-0 run by Bakersfield erased the Matador lead before a Smith kill gave CSUN its final lead at 14-13. With the score tied at 16-16, the Roadrunners put together a 5-2 run to open up a 21-18 lead. A Leah Miller kill cut the deficit to two at 21-19 before CSUB claimed the final four points.
S2 l CSUB 25, CSUN 14 – The Roadrunners would hit .464 to CSUN's .125 to take a two-set lead following the 25-14 win. The visitors jumped out to an 8-2 and would never trail in the set. A Brockway kill pulled the Matadors within five at 12-7 but CSUN would get closer the remainder of the set.
S3 l CSUN 25, CSUB 16 – The Matadors rebounded to hit .270 in set three while limiting Bakersfield to a .103 hitting clip. With the score tied 4-4, CSUN engineered a 5-1 run, capped by a co-block from Smith and Iye Okolo to take a 9-5 lead. A Sentes ace extended the Matador lead to seven at 13-6 and CSUN would go on to win going away 25-16.

CSUN completes the week with a Sunday match in Honolulu as the Matadors travel to SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center take on the Rainbow Wahine at 8 p.m.

S4 l CSUB 25, CSUN 22 – The Roadrunners again got off to a quick start, leading 6-2 after the opening eight points. Still down four at 12-8, CSUN rallied behind a 4-1 run to pull within one (13-12) following a Brockway-Okolo block. A 5-2 Bakersfield run opened up an 18-14 lead forcing a Matador timeout before consecutive kills from Smith kept the margin at two. Three straight CSUB points out of a timeout gave the Runners a five-point advantage (21-16) before CSUN would rally late before falling 25-22.
NOTES
- With the win, CSUB improves to 10-12 (4-6 Big West) while trimming CSUN's lead to 34-12 in the all-time series.
CSUN completes the week with a Sunday match in Honolulu as the Matadors travel to SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center take on the Rainbow Wahine at 8 p.m.
