10/31/2024 6:01:00 PM | Women's Soccer
DAVIS, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer's dropped a 3-0 decision to UC Davis in the regular season finale on Thursday at Aggie Soccer Field. The loss eliminated the Matadors from postseason contention.
Picked to finish last in the Big West standings prior to the season, the Matadors would improve their win total by four games from 2023 and remain alive for a postseason spot until the final day of the regular season under first-year head coach Gina Brewer.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN came out quickly with shots on goal from Yoshi Rubalcava and Cailey Jackson over the first five minutes of action. However, the Aggies would strike first shortly thereafter in the 16th minute. After a CSUN foul from above the box, Bella Mayo set up the scoring chance with a free kick to the middle of the box where Sam Tristan finished the play with a header for a 1-0 lead. The Matadors would fight until the end of the half, gaining a shot on frame from Jackson.
In the second half, the Aggies doubled their lead with a 52nd minute strike off the foot of Genevieve Fontes before adding a third goal six minutes later on a goal from Sarah Canavan from the right side of the box. Despite the 3-0 deficit, CSUN kept on battling down the stretch of the match. Sunny Bowlin-Stacy had her shot saved by Caeley Goldstein while Jackson and Ashly Torres were denied as well on strikes from inside the box. Torres had three more shot attempts late in the match with another shot saved by Goldstein in the 80th minute. The shot count remained even in the second half with seven on each side, but the Matadors would be unable to find the net on the day.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"We are extremely proud of the growth and improvement from our team this season. Unfortunately, we fell a little short today, but that doesn't take away from the enjoyable moments we had throughout this season that showed the capability of our team. We know the future is bright and we are already excited for next year! We would like to thank our four seniors, Brooklin, Kaylee, Ashly and Angelica because they have moved the needle forward and are leaving this program in a better place!"
