NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Amaris Smith was one of three CSUN hitters with double figures in kills but the Matadors could not overcome a hot-hitting UC Irvine squad as the Anteaters claimed a four-set win on Saturday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
Smith paced CSUN (8-15, 3-9 Big West) with 14 kills (.194) while Julia Bazylevych added 12 kills (.152), and Leah Miller chipped in 11 kills on .300 hitting. Setter Katie Kolar had a solid all-around match with 39 assists, seven digs, four kills, and one block while libero Paige Sentes recorded a team-high 12 digs.
CSUN wound up hitting .197 as a team while the visiting Anteaters hit a season-high .426, the sixth-best mark in the Big West this season. UCI also posted a 7-2 lead in blocks and had 43 team digs to 38 for CSUN.
SET 1: UCI 25, CSUN 20
CSUN held a host of early leads before a UCI block gave the visitors a 7-6 lead. The Matadors would rally behind a 4-1 run to take a 10-8 lead on an Anteater hitting error. UCI then scored five straight to take back the lead at 13-10. CSUN would close to within three at 19-16 and again at 20-17 before UCI pulled away for the 25-20 win.
SET 2: CSUN 25, UCI 22
The Matadors turned the tables in set two, hitting .500 as a team to even the match at one set apiece. After UCI claimed the first three points, CSUN took advantage of an Anteater hitting error to cap a 10-7 run that tied the score. The score remained tied at 13-13 when the Matadors scored three straight, capped by an Autumn Rojelio ace, to open up a 16-13 lead. Four more ties ensued, the last at 21-21, when CSUN used a pair of Miller kills, a Tatiana Turgeon ace, and a Bazylevych kill to seal the 25-22 win.

SET 3: UCI 25, CSUN 10
The Anteaters opened the third set by outscoring CSUN 7-1. Following a Matador timeout, UCI scored three more times to extend the lead to 10-1. An Anteater ace gave UCI a double-digit lead at 14-4 and the visitors were not threatened the rest of the way in a 25-10 win.
SET 4: UCI 25, CSUN 19
The Matadors faced another early deficit as UCI bolted out to a 7-0 lead and would not trail for the second straight set. A Sentes ace trimmed the UCI lead to five at 10-5 and CSUN would also remain within five 19-14 but the Matadors would get no closer in falling 25-19.
