LONG BEACH, Calif. – The CSUN women's volleyball team concluded the 2024 season with a four-set loss to Long Beach State in a Big West match Saturday night at Walter Pyramid.
After the two teams split the first two sets, the Beach claimed the final two sets to complete the 25-9, 21-25, 25-14, 25-16 win. With the win, Long Beach State improves to 18-6 overall and 12-6 in the Big West which earns the Beach the No. 4 seed in next week's Outrigger Big West Championship.
Leah Miller and Amaris Smith each had 13 kills to lead the Matadors (10-19, 5-13 Big West) in the season finale. Smith hit .333 on 33 swings, while Miller connected at a .241 clip on 29 attacks. Smith added nine digs and one ace to her stats total while Miller chipped in a pair of blocks.
Julia Bazylevych added six kills for CSUN on a match-high 39 swings while middles Iye Okolo and Tatiana Turgeon each chipped in four kills with Okolo posting a team-high three blocks.
Matador setter Katie Kolar registered 26 assists and nine digs but CSUN was limited to a .102 (41-27-137) team-hitting clip in the loss. Sophomore libero Paige Sentes added seven digs to her season tally as she finished the season with a Big West-best 468 digs.
SET 1: LBSU 25, CSUN 9 – After a Miller kill pulled CSUN even at 2-2 in the opening set, the Beach would score 16 unanswered points before an Okolo kill ended the run with the Matadors down 18-3. CSUN, which was out-hit .391 to -.179 in the set, would not threaten the remainder of the frame as the hosts closed out a 25-9 win.
SET 2: CSUN 25, LBSU 21 – The Matadors would quickly turn the page in the second set, out-hitting the Beach .438 to .387 to pull even with a 25-21 win. Miller, Bazylevych, and Smith combined for 14 kills in the set as CSUN raced out to a 7-2 lead. A Bazylevych kill opened up the Matadors' largest lead at 12-4 and CSUN would hold off a late Beach rally that trimmed the lead to three (23-20). After Miller's kill gave the Matadors set point at 24-20, Long Beach saved one set point before Miller connected again sending CSUN to the 25-21 win.
SET 3: LBSU 25, CSUN 14 – After putting down 17 kills in set two alone, the Matadors were limited to 19 kills over the final two sets. The Beach would bolt to an 8-1 lead to open the third, forcing an early CSUN timeout. Long Beach would extend its lead to double digits (14-3), forcing the Matadors' final timeout in the process. A pair of kills by Smith capped an 8-2 CSUN run that trimmed the margin to 16-11 but the Matadors would get no closer.
SET 4: LBSU 25, CSUN 16 – The final set featured seven ties, the most of the match, as the two teams played to a 10-10 tie. Long Beach would claim three straight to force a CSUN timeout at 13-10 when a Beach hitting error and a CSUN block pulled the Matadors back within one at 13-12. But that was as close as CSUN would get as Long Beach scored five straight to open up an 18-12 lead on its way to a 25-16 final.
