2/10/2024 5:56:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
CLAREMONT, Calif.---No. 23 CSUN Water Polo went 2-0 at the Claremont Invite on Saturday at Axelrood Pool. The Matadors defeated Concordia 16-9 to start the day before winning a high-scoring affair against the Claremont Mudd-Scripps 16-15. Dorottya Telek netted 10 combined goals on the day to move up to third place in school history for career goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. CONCORDIA
CSUN came out quickly against the Eagles with Shelby Hovanesian, Anna Pal and Helena Sandhagen each hitting the net for a 3-0 lead. Concordia though responded with two goals to end the first quarter before squaring the game at 3-3 on a tally from Tamsyn Evezard near the halfway point of the second quarter. The Matador offense would come alive with three consecutive goals scored by leading scorer Dorottya Telek. The lead would be trimmed to 6-4 but CSUN scored three of the final four goals of the first half to claim a 9-5 lead. Goalkeeper Samantha Bright punctuated a six-goal second quarter with a goal from deep.
CSUN extended to an 11-5 lead in the third quarter on goals from Telek and Tatum Scarry. Scoreless for most of the period, Concordia scored twice in the final minute of the third quarter, but CSUN still led 12-5. The Matadors would continue to pull away in the fourth quarter as Telek notched her fifth goal while Scarry and Pal also hit the net. Jade Cuevas closed the scoring for the match with a late strike in the seven-goal victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. CMS
After a big first match, Telek struck the netting three consecutive times over the first three-plus minutes of the match against CMS. After the Athenas moved to within one, Telek notched her fourth goal late in the first period. Early in the second quarter, Sandhagen scored on a power play for a 5-3 lead. However, CMS would not go away quietly throughout the afternoon. The Athenas evened the match twice in the second quarter before goals from Kianna Melvin and Scarry helped give CSUN a slim 8-7 lead at intermission.
Pal and Melvin contributed to a CSUN 10-7 lead in the third quarter, but CMS responded with three-straight tallies for a 10-10 score. After an exclusion was called on CMS, Pal gave CSUN the lead right back before Telek notched her fifth goal of the match with 1:19 on the clock for a 12-10 lead.
In a back-and-forth final period, the Athenas evened the game at 12-12, 13-13 and 14-14 before Sandhagen scored a timely goal with 1:35 remaining. CSUN's defense came up big on a defensive stop then Scarry found the net with 35 seconds to play to put the game out of reach. A late goal from CMS was not enough to catch CSUN.
NOTES OF THE GAMES
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"We had a great power play defense against Concordia, going 12-of-15 killing penalties. We are still lacking some consistency on the offensive end, but this was a nice overall team win and a good way to start the day.
"This was not our finest hour, but the sign of a good team is winning on our average days and we did that against CMS. With foul trouble causing rotation issues in the first half, we again got positive contributions from our bench and we were able to come away with a victory."
UP NEXT
