LOS ANGELES, Calif.— Shaylan Whatman belted her first home run of the season to lead the CSUN Softball team to a 5-3 victory over Maryland at Smith Field on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams threatened in the first inning but could not push the first run across. The Matadors returned strong in the second inning, loading the bases with one out. Vinessa Nunez launched the ball into center field for a single as Kaylee Escutia came home. The Terrapins fumbled and made an error on the play as CSUN took the opening. Mackenzie Kila and Maiya Alemania scored runs on the error as the Matadors took a 3-0 lead.
The Terrapins tried to make the difference, but the Matadors kept control through the third inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Maryland managed to break through CSUN's tough pitching as they scored three runs to tie the game. The Matadors answered quickly as Whatman blasted a two-run homer into center field in the top of the fifth. Kennedy Gustin came home with her as the Matadors took a 5-3 lead. Isabella Alonso came out of the bullpen in the fourth and gave CSUN a lift by not allowing a run over the final 3.2 innings to pick up the win.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"Today was a great win. It's a new team, but the way we ended last year didn't sit well and we talked about that. I thought it was really good to see that we answered back."
UP NEXT
The Matadors return home to host the CSUN Matador Diamond Classic. Weather permitting, CSUN begins with a game against Pacific on Friday, Feb. 16, at 1:30 p.m. at Matador Diamond. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
