CSUN Falls Just Short on the Road at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.---CSUN Women's Basketball fell to Cal Poly 75-68 on Thursday night at Mott Athletics Center. Three players reached double digits in points: Kayanna Spriggs with 14, Kaitlyn Elsholz with 13, and Erica Adams with 11.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors opened the game with a layup by Spriggs. The Mustangs were quick to fire back as they tied it. CSUN shook it off as Adams and Spriggs overtook Cal Poly with a jumper and layup. The Mustangs tried to counter, but the Matadors kept going with four free throws by Talo Li-Uperesa and Elsholz. The Mustangs tried to disrupt CSUN's momentum, but the Matadors weren't phased as Alondra Lizama and Spriggs kept the baskets coming as the pair raised the score to 14-8. The Mustangs caught a second wind as they began to close the distance, but the Matadors kept their lead with a 3-pointer from Rachel Harvey in the last 11 seconds. CSUN took the first quarter at 18-13.

The Matadors kept their momentum into the second quarter with a 3-pointer from Elsholz. The Mustangs made the next basket, but Ferguson responded with her own layup. Cal Poly tried to close the distance again as they brought the game within four points as the score climbed to 25-21. The Matadors didn't let them stay close for long as Spriggs made a layup and free throw. The Mustangs continued to make baskets, but Elsholz struck next to keep them at bay. Cal Poly pushed through though as the Mustangs got closer as the half closed with CSUN on top 30-28.

Spriggs opened the third quarter with another layup. She was followed by Adams' free throws. The Mustangs made another basket, but CSUN pulled ahead with a pair of 3-pointers from Elsholz and Laney Amundsen. The Mustangs tried for another comeback, but Ferguson shut them down in the sixth minute with a jumper. Harvey was next with her own jumper as the score raised to 44-38. Cal Poly went for another strike as they tried to recover, but Adams and Ferguson shut down the Mustangs. Cal Poly made the final basket of the third quarter as the Mustangs trailed by 49-44.

The Mustangs pulled away though as they went on a late run with only 2:25 left on the clock. Adams, Li-Uperesa, and Ferguson tried to close the distance, but the Mustangs claimed the game.
NOTES OF THE GAME
CSUN returns home to take on UC Santa Barbara in the Premier America Credit Union Arena on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
