CSUN Rally Falls Short to UCSB

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Basketball fell to UC Santa Barbara 64-60 on Saturday afternoon. Kaitlyn Elsholz finished with a team-high 21 points, one point shy of a career-high.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gauchos opened the game with an early lead of 6-0 before the Matadors fired back with a 3-pointer by Laney Amundsen. UC Santa Barbara continued to pull away, but Kayanna Spriggs and Amundsen didn't let the Gauchos get far as CSUN pulled to within 8-7. Talo Li-Uperesa took the lead for the Matadors as she made a jumper. UC Santa Barbara reacted quickly as they went on a 6-0 run. Elsholz, Rachel Harvey, and Olivia Smith banded together as the trio connected on shots and tied the game at 16-16 with a little over two minutes on the clock. The Gauchos didn't miss a beat as they took back the lead 22-16 by the end of the quarter.
UC Santa Barbara opened the second quarter with a basket, but the Matadors quickly responded with two layups from Spriggs and Adams. They kept the game close as UC Santa Barbara kept trying to pull away. Elsholz and Li-Uperesa struck next as they brought the Matadors to within two points at 33-31. The Gauchos tried once more to pull ahead, but Erica Adams brought the game close at 35-33 with a jumper in the last ten seconds.
The Matadors returned reinvigorated as Elsholz made the first basket of the third quarter to tie the game at 35-35. After a free throw from the Gauchos, Elsholz made a 3-pointer and layup to take the lead. UC Santa Barbara were quick to take the lead back as they went on an 11-1 run to close the quarter.
The Gauchos kept their momentum going as they opened the fourth quarter with a basket. Two free throws from Li-Uperesa and a jumper from Amiyah Ferguson kept the Matadors in the game as the lead stood at 53-45. Ferguson and Elsholz kept the baskets coming, but UC Santa Barbara continued to hold off CSUN. The Matadors didn't give up as Spriggs made a layup with 1:39 on the clock. CSUN weaved through the Gauchos' defense as Elsholz and Li-Uperesa drew the Matadors closer at 60-58. UC Santa Barbara tried to get some room to breathe, but Adams refused to let them get away with a layup in the last three seconds that brought the score to 62-60. The Gauchos would get two free throw to hold on for the win.

• CSUN drops to 2-21 overall and 0-13 in conference. UC Santa Barbara is 15-8 overall and 9-4 in conference.
• The Matadors had a higher free throw percentage with 86.7 to the Gauchos' 70.6
• UC Santa Barbara had a higher 3-point percentage (29.6-17.6) and out-rebounded CSUN (42-35).
• The Matadors recorded more steals (15-8) and points in the paint (36-22).
