
CSUN Splits Day One of San Diego Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—CSUN split day one of the San Diego Classic. UNLV took the first game against the Matadors with an 8-2 win. The Matadors took the next game against San Diego with an 8-1 victory. Lauryn Carranco reached a new career high with 12 strikeouts against the Toreros.
HOW IT HAPPENED
vs. UNLV
The Rebels were the first to score with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. Isabella Alonso and the Matador defense would hold strong as they didn't allow UNLV to score again through the first five innings. At the top of the sixth inning, CSUN managed to break through the Rebels' defense as Alexis Chavez tied the game with a single into left field to bring Shaylan Whatman home. UNLV didn't flinch as the Rebels broke open the game with 7 runs at the bottom of the sixth to take the lead back at 8-1. The Matadors tried to start a late rally as Gizella Vargas Sandoval singled into left field to bring in Kennedy Gustin, but the Rebels took the game 8-2.
vs. San Diego
The Matadors started strong as they scored first with a triple by Mikayla Carman to bring Whatman home. They carried their momentum into the second inning as Vinessa Nunez singled into center field to bring in Maiya Alemania. Whatman followed with an explosive two-run home run to bring CSUN's lead to 4-0. The Matadors kept the hits coming in the top of the fourth inning as Carman hit a single to bring Whatman home. Chavez struck next as she scored a run on a wild pitch by the Toreros. Kaylee Escutia brought in the final run of the inning with a double to bring the Matadors' score to 7-0. At the top of the seventh inning, Vargas Sandoval gave CSUN its final run with a score on another wild pitch. The Toreros tried to make a comeback in the bottom of the seventh with a run of their own, but Lauryn Carranco shut them down.
NOTES OF THE GAME

CSUN's overall record is 12-4. UNLV is 8-7 and San Diego is 4-13.

Isabella Alonso pitched for 5.1 innings against the Rebels. She got two strikeouts and allowed six hits with seven runs. Alexia Ramirez stepped into the circle next and closed the game with 0.2 innings left.

Carranco pitched a complete game against the Toreros. She got 12 strikeouts and allowed one run with three hits.

Shaylan Whatman led the teams in runs with a combined four.

Mikayla Carman and Shaylan Whatman led the team in RBIs as they got two each.

UP NEXT
The Matadors prepare for their final day of the tournament. They take on UNLV at 11:30 a.m. before battling San Diego at 2 p.m. The second game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
