#24 CSUN Hosts #8 UC Irvine in Big West Home Opener

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo (16-12, 0-1 Big West) looks to stay unbeaten at home when it hosts No. 8 UC Irvine in the Matadors' Big West home opener on Friday at noon.
LAST TIME OUT
CSUN dropped a pair of games at the CBU Invite on Tuesday. The Matadors fell to La Salle 9-7 before suffering a 17-10 setback to host California Baptist. Anna Pal led the way for CSUN in the opening game, scoring three times while Nicole Bacoyanis and Shelby Hovanesian had two each against the Lancers. Meghan Lopez played six of the eight quarters in front of the cage, totaling 17 saves.
BIG WEST SCHEDULE AHEAD
CSUN wrapped up non-conference play with its two matches on Tuesday at the CBU Invite. The Matadors will play their final six regular season games against Big West competition starting with UC Irvine. Up next, CSUN will visit Hawai'i next Saturday, March 23 before playing their final two home matches versus Long Beach State on March 30 and UC Santa Barbara on April 5. The regular season concludes on the road as CSUN heads to Cal State Fullerton on April 7 and UC Davis on April 13.
TOP PERFORMERS
Anna Pal has taken over the team lead in points with 108, which also tops The Big West. Pal leads the conference as well in assists with 56. Dorottya Telek also leads The Big West in goals with 82 while she is behind Pal in points with 105. Helena Sandhagen has hit the net 39 times while Shelby Hovanesian has 30 goals. Hovanesian is also the team's steal leader with 24 with Pal in second place at 23. Meghan Lopez remains the conference leader in saves with 162 on the season.Â

UC Irvine is tied with Michigan for the No. 8 ranking in this week's top-25. On the year, UCI is 11-9 with a recent win over Concordia by an 18-8 score on Wednesday. The Anteaters have won each of the last two Big West Championships. The team went 20-7 overall and 7-0 in the Big West last season. The tandem of Brooke Hourigan and Libby Alexander have 28 goals apiece while Jensine Bugelli has a team-high 29 steals with 21 goals. Faith Tedesco has recorded 118 saves to go with a 10.48 goals-against-average at goalkeeper.
Series History: UCI leads CSUN 34-4 in the all-time series with 22 consecutive wins. CSUN's last win came in 2010 in an 11-9 overtime triumph at Matador Pool.
