CSUN Falls at CBU 3-2 on Walk-Off Hit

RIVERSIDE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball dropped the finale of its five-game road trip to California Baptist, 3-2, on Monday afternoon at Totman Stadium. Andrew Gauna homered for the second time this season while six CSUN pitchers combined to limit the Lancers to six total hits on the day. CBU though pushed across the winning run in the ninth to take the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN would grab the lead in the top of the second inning when Gauna hit a towering solo homer to left field for a 1-0 lead. The Matadors would later have runners at first and second base with two outs but settled for the one run as Kamau Neighbors grounded out to short.
The Matadors though doubled their lead in the third inning. Jakob Simons began the rally with a one-out single. After Simons moved up to second base on a wild pitch, Jarren Sanderson came through with an RBI single up the middle to stretch the lead to 2-0.
CSUN pitching though was the story for most of the afternoon. Freshman Lucas Casey earned the spot start on Monday and retired six of the first seven batters he faced to kick off the game. Casey pitched around a pair of walks in the third to keep CBU off the scoreboard through three. Ryan Halamicek took over on the mound in the fourth and allowed just a walk in a scoreless frame then Joshua Martinez followed and hurled a shutout bottom of the fifth.
Matador pitching limited the Lancers to just two hits through the first five innings, but CBU finally broke through in the sixth. Mitch Simon led off with a single and Jake Brown drew a walk to quickly put runners at first and second with nobody out. Gabriel Hernandez would retire the next two batters, but Gunner Antillon came through with a two-run double to even the game at 2-2.
In the seventh, CSUN threatened to reclaim the lead when the Matadors loaded the bases with two outs. However, CBU's Nathan Hemmerling retired Gauna on a groundout to third to end the frame.
Diego Gutierrez would give CSUN a lift on the mound in the late innings. First, he struck out Garret Ostrander to end the sixth before tossing a shutout seventh and eighth innings.
Gutierrez allowed just one hit in his 2.2 innings of work, but that hit came to leadoff the bottom of the ninth. After Gutierrez retired Antillon on a sacrifice bunt, Hayden Hall took over on the mound. Hall was able to sit down Ostrander on a lineout, but Nick Dumesnil came away with the game-winning hit on a single to left.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"It was a competitive game to round out this stretch of road games. The pitching staff showed very well today. I take full responsibility for today's game. I wasn't sharp with the matchups and the decision-making. The fundamentals and commitment to a plan broke down offensively."
