NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Softball's senior Shaylan Whatman was one of 16 selected to the Australian Women's Softball Team, the "Aussie Spirit" for the 2024 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) World Cup this summer.
Â
Whatman will join the Aussie Spirit for final preparations for the 2024 Softball World Cup in Brisbane, Australia in June before competing in the Canada Cup. She is set to represent her country at the WBSC World Cup in Castions di Strada, Italy from July 15-21.
Â
"Being selected to the team has been a huge goal of mine since I started playing softball when I was around nine years old," said Whatman. "I've put in so much hard work and made so many sacrifices throughout the years to get here, so finally being able to say I've made it is truly something special for me.
Â
"There's no better feeling than being able to represent your country playing the sport you love, so I could not be more excited or more grateful for this opportunity," she added.
Â
After earning All-Big West Second Team honors last season, Whatman is having an outstanding senior season with the Matadors in 2024. Whatman tops The Big West with eight home runs this season while she leads CSUN in runs scored (27), RBI (19), walks (11) and slugging percentage (.582) to go with a .291 batting average through 37 games.
"We are beyond proud of Shaylan for making the Australian National Team," said head coach Charlotte Morgan. "This has been a huge goal for her, and we are lucky to have been a part of her journey. Shaylan has worked so hard and grown so much in her short time here. We are excited to see her continue to do great things with the National Team. It is a well-deserved honor, and we are proud to say she is and always will be a proud part of our Matador family."
Â
Whatman is one of two current Division I student-athletes along with Madison Scott from Eastern Kentucky to be selected to the national team. The 16-player roster also includes seven Olympians in Clare Warwick, Jade Wall, Michelle Cox, Stacey McManus, Taylah Tsitsikronis, Kaia Parnaby and Ellen Roberts.
Â
Along with Australia, the eight-team field for 2024 WBSC World Cup consists of the United States, Japan, Puerto Rico, Netherlands, Canada, China and Italy.
