CSUN Opens Big West Championship with UC Davis

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Tennis opens play at the 2024 Big West Championship on Thursday. The second-seeded Matadors play a quarterfinal match against seventh-seeded UC Davis with first serve at noon. Live video and stats will be available for the match and links can be found at GoMatadors.com. The conference tournament will be held at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
FIRST SERVE
CSUN holds the No. 2 seed in the Big West Championship, the program's highest seed since joining the Big West in 2002. The Matadors finished the regular season with a 13-6 overall record and a 7-2 Big West record as CSUN posted its best win percentage (.778) in conference play in its Big West history.
The winner of CSUN and UC Davis will take on the winner of third-seeded Hawai'i and sixth-seeded Cal State Fullerton in the semifinals of the Big West Championship on Friday at noon. CSUN seeks to avenge a loss to UC Davis suffered earlier this season in Davis as the Matadors fell by a 4-3 score.
LAST TIME OUT
The Matadors wrapped up the regular season season on Sunday afternoon with a Senior Day victory over defending Big West champion Hawai'i, 4-3. CSUN's lone senior Sasha Turchak led the way with a singles win at No. 1 along with a doubles victory with teammate Yuliia Zhytelna. Emma Moratalla Sanz and Elena Goodman also posted singles wins on the day. The win over the Bows was the program's first since the 2015 season while CSUN recorded its first home win in the series since 2010.
TOP PERFORMERS
After an injury-plagued 2023 season, Victoria Santibañez Luna has notched a career-high and team-leading 11 singles wins in 2024 thus far. In conference play, Santibañez Luna has especially been tough, registering a 7-2 record. Emma Moratalla Sanz also reached double digits in wins this season, posting 10 while Angela Ho has won nine times with seven coming against Big West foes.
In doubles play, Sasha Turchak and Yuliia Zhytelna have gone 11-4 this season at No. 1 while Ho and Elena Goodman have posted a 10-3 record at No. 3. Santibañez Luna and Cindy Ung have registered a 9-5 record at No. 2.

Arianna Stavropoulos has a team-high 10 singles wins at No. 1 while Olive Maunupau and Carly Schwartzberg have nine wins apiece. The sister combination of Olive and Daisy Maunupau have notched 10 victories overall in doubles play.
Series History: CSUN leads UC Davis 17-11 in the all-time series. The Aggies handed CSUN one of its two conference losses on April 7 by a 4-3 decision. The teams have played just once in the history of the Big West Championship with CSUN coming out on top 4-2 in the 2008 conference tournament.
