NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball fell by a 12-4 score to California Baptist on Tuesday afternoon at Matador Field. Kamau Neighbors led the way with two hits and two RBI while Bren Wilkinson scored twice and drove in a run. CBU homered five times in the game and broke open a two-run game with a big fifth inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lancers struck first in the top of the second, taking advantage of a one-out error that plated Connor Mcquire. CSUN though answered quickly in the home half of the inning when Shunsuke Sakaino drove home Jarren Sanderson on an RBI single up the middle.
However, CBU would lean on the long ball throughout the day, and in the third, the Lancers reclaimed the lead on a big fly. Lucas Casey served up a pair of walks in the frame, setting the table for Josh Paino who belted a three-run homer to left field. An inning later, Mitch Simon stroked a one-out solo homer to extend the Lancer lead to 5-1.
The Matadors fought back in the home half of the fourth with a pair of timely two-out hits to cut the deficit in half. Andrew Gauna began the frame with an infield single before advancing up to third on a pair of groundouts. Wilkinson would drive in Gauna with a double down the left-field line to pull the Matadors a run closer. Moments later, Neighbors followed with a bloop single to center, bringing in Wilkinson to make it a 5-3 game.
With its lead down to two, CBU put together a big five-run fifth to put the game out of reach. Despite giving up a pair of one-out singles, the Matadors were an out away from getting out of the inning unscathed. However, Ryan Kim worked a walk and pinch hitter Gunner Antillon was hit by a pitch to force in a run. From there, Simon delivered the big blow, a grand slam to left field to extend the lead to 10-3.Â
The Matadors got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double from Neighbors but settled for just the one run and left two runners on base. The Lancers answered quickly in the top of the eighth with back-to-back solo homers from Michael Carpentier and Nick Dumesnil with two outs.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"We struggled on the mound. We struggled offensively and we didn't play complete defense. It wasn't exemplary of who we are as a baseball team, so we're going to have flush this really quick and get back to what we're good at."
