CSUN Drops Opener at Hawai'i, 3-2
5/4/2024 12:07:00 AM | Baseball
HONOLULU---CSUN Baseball had its nine-game win streak snapped on Friday in a 3-2 loss at Hawai'i at Les Murakami Stadium. Matador pitching allowed just one earned run on the night, but Hawai'i scored the go-ahead run in the fourth and held CSUN to zero hits after the third inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After picking up two hits in the first inning, the Matadors broke through in the top of the second with another two-hit frame. Jarren Sanderson collected a leadoff single before the next two batters were retired. With two outs, Mason Le came through with an RBI double to give CSUN a 1-0 edge.
Â
That lead though was short-lived as the Rainbow Warriors took advantage of a CSUN error to plate two unearned runs in the bottom of the second. Thomas Bainton walked two batters in the inning, but induced a groundball that was mishandled at shortstop. Jordan Donahue took advantage with a two-run double that Jakob Simons nearly caught on a diving attempt.
Â
The Matadors though took advantage of a Hawai'i error in the top of the third to even the game. Simons, who singled and stole second base, would touch home plate when Andrew Sojka reached on an infield single, and a throwing error occurred at shortstop. CSUN would settle for the one run though as Sanderson was retired on a fly out.
Unfortunately, for CSUN, Sojka's two-out infield single in the third would be the team's final hit of the night.
Hawai'i reclaimed the lead in the fourth on a two-out RBI single from Jordan Donahue. Bainton rebounded to retire the next six Rainbow Warriors to keep CSUN within a 3-2 deficit.
However, Bainton would issue six walks in the ballgame, and after walking two in the sixth he exited the game. Kenji Pallares entered the fray with two outs in the sixth and two runners on base before retiring Donahue for the final out of the inning.
In the seventh, Pallares retired the side in order, collecting two strikeouts, while he stranded a runner in scoring position in the eighth.
On the flip side, CSUN could not get anything going against Hawai'i reliever Alex Giroux. The right hander entered in the fifth and retired the side in order. From there, he struck out the side in the sixth and fanned two more batters in the seventh, both of which were looking. Giroux punched out another batter in the eighth and tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to finish off his dominating outing.Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"We beat ourselves tonight with the free passes we gave them early and we didn't adjust at the plate like we know we can. They pitched a great game, and we didn't force them to adjust to us. This was a tough pill to swallow because of what we are capable of and I'm looking forward to how we bounce back tomorrow."
