CSUN Water Polo Boasts 15 on ACWPC All-Academic Team

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---A total of 15 members of the CSUN Water Polo team were honored with All-Academic honors by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) on Thursday. The 15 honorees match last year's mark and tie for the second-most in program history.
"We put a real emphasis on excelling in the classroom within the program," said head coach Matt Warshaw. "It's great to see these student-athletes be recognized for their effort and energy academically."
The ACWPC recognizes honorees in three categories based on grade point average (GPA): Outstanding (3.71-4.00), Superior (3.41-3.70) and Excellent (3.20-3.40). To qualify, a student-athlete must be a member of a team during the 2023-24 school year and have competed in at least one contest.
CSUN had eight earning Outstanding distinction including Samantha Bright, Shelby Hovanesian, Meghan Lopez, Jenna Olson, Anna Pal, Maria Sandoghdar, Tatum Scarry and Dorottya Telek while the quartet of Jade Cuevas, Jessica Matkovich, Tatiana Smeltzer and Nicole Thomas collected Superior honors and the trio of Kianna Melvin, Helena Sandhagen and Alexis Smith received Excellent honors.
As a team, CSUN was one-of-63 teams to earn all-academic accolades with a team 3.43 GPA.
Earlier this month, the Matador water polo also set a program record with 12 honorees on the 2024 Spring Big West All-Academic Team.
