CSUN Opens Home Schedule With Idaho and LMU This Week

GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer opens its home schedule this week with a pair of matches at Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors host Idaho in the 2024 home opener on Thursday at noon before taking on LMU on Sunday at 7 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Ghizal Hasan on the call.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN opened the 2024 schedule last week on the road, dropping a pair of matches. The Matadors fell by a 1-0 score at California Baptist as the Lancers broke a scoreless tie in the 50th minute and held on down the stretch. On Sunday, CSUN suffered a 4-0 defeat at eighth-ranked Texas Tech with the Red Raiders scoring two goals in each half. Three of the five goals given up last week came off second-chance shots following a goalkeeper save.
Junior goalkeeper Riley Liebsack started all 180 minutes in her first two matches with CSUN. She transferred from UNLV last season but missed the entire 2023 campaign. Liebsack posted 19 total saves in the two matches including a career-high 11 saves at Texas Tech.
Paige Califf led CSUN with four shots and two on goal over the two matches while Ashley Torres and Kayden Perigo had two shots each.
NEW MATADORS ON THE PITCH
True freshmen Kayden Perigo, Keilani Claiborne and Sydney Lipkin made their collegiate debuts last week with the Matadors. Redshirt freshman Jordyn Canister, who missed last season with injury, also played in both matches and picked up a shot.
NEW ERA OF CSUN WOMEN'S SOCCER
The 2024 season represents the first under first-year head coach Gina Brewer who brings to CSUN two decades of coaching experience. She is the seventh head coach in CSUN's nearly three decade history of women's soccer. Brewer most recently spent last season as an assistant coach at UCLA where she helped the Bruins to a Pac-12 championship and a 16-win season. From 2011-19, Brewer spent nine seasons as head coach at Hawaii Pacific University, accumulating 71 victories as the program's longest-tenured head coach. In her coaching career, she has spent time on the coaching staffs at Santa Clara, LMU, Hawai'i, Utah State and Idaho.
SCOUTING IDAHO
On the season, Idaho is 1-1 with a series-opening 3-0 victory over UC Riverside and a 3-1 loss at Seattle U last week. The Vandals finished 2023 at 12-5-2 overall and with the second-best record in the Big Sky Conference at 5-2-1. Idaho went on to win the Big Sky Tournament and play in the NCAA Tournament. Prior to the season, Idaho was picked to finish third in the Big Sky in 2024. Forward Sienna Gonzalez possesses two of the team's four goals on the season thus far while Paula Flores has nine saves through two matches in goal. Forward Jadyn Hanks and midfielder Hannah Alfaro-Black are the team's top returning goal scorers with five each last season.
Series History: CSUN holds a 4-2 edge over Idaho but the teams have played just once over a 17-year period. Last season, the teams squared off in Northridge with the Vandals coming out on top 5-1.
SCOUTING LMU
The Lions come in with a 2-0 record after posting a 2-0 win at UC Santa Barbara and a 3-2 victory at UC Davis last week. LMU finished 6-10-3 overall with a 0-5-3 record in the WCC last season. Prior to the season, the Lions were picked to finish 10th in the WCC in 2024. Forward Kylie Dobbs has three of the team's five goals this season. Both Dobbs and defender Jennessa Groves have returned to the team after scoring a team-high four goals in 2023. JJ Hoover has seen every minute in goal for LMU, posting three saves as she is coming off a season where she recorded six wins, four shutouts and a 1.00 GAA.
Series History: LMU leads CSUN 13-4 in the all-time series with 1-0 wins in each of the past two seasons. The Matadors are looking to snap a three-game skid in the series and pick up their first win over the Lions since Sept. 2013 (2-1 win).
