Matadors Fall in Four Sets to UC Santa Barbara in Big West Action

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The CSUN women's volleyball team battled back from a two-set deficit and nearly forced a fifth set but visiting UC Santa Barbara held on for a 3-1 win in a Big West match Saturday at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
After dropping the opening two sets, the Matadors won set three (25-23) and had four swings at set four before the Gauchos pulled out a 31-29 win.
Hailey Brockway led CSUN (5-8, 0-2 Big West) with 14 kills, 11 digs, and three aces while hitting .250 on 36 swings. Iye Okolo and Amaris Smith each added 12 kills with Okolo hitting .474 to reach her career-high in kills. Leah Miller chipped in nine kills (.156) while Katie Kolar handed out 43 assists to go with three aces, nine digs, and a pair of blocks.
The visiting Gauchos out-hit the Matadors .320 to .208 but the Matadors would post a 9-7 edge at the service line and a 3-1 edge in blocks.
S1 – After CSUN scored the first three points, the teams traded points until the Gauchos used a CSUN hitting error to take a two-point lead (15-13) into the media timeout. The Matadors took their first lead at 17-16 following a Kolar ace when UCSB scored seven straight points open a 23-17 lead, forcing a pair of CSUN timeouts in the process. The Matadors saved a pair of set points before a Gaucho kill sealed the 25-20 win.
S2 – The visitors claimed six of the first eight points of set two and led by as many as seven at 12-5 forcing a Matador timeout. A Brockway-Turgeon co-block and a Brockway kill capped a 7-3 CSUN run as the Matadors rallied back to within two at 16-14. A Kolar ace trimmed the deficit to one (18-17) forcing a UCSB timeout. The Gauchos would end up taking a 25-22 win.
S3 – After trailing 6-4 early on, CSUN rallied behind an 8-3 run to lead 12-9. Still up three at 19-16 following a Gaucho timeout, the Matadors used a Kolar ace to open up a 20-16 cushion. UCSB would rally to tie the score at 22-22 before CSUN outscored the Gauchos 3-1 down the stretch for a 25-23 win.
S4 – With the score knotted at 10-10 in the fourth set, UCSB claimed four straight to force a CSUN timeout. A pair of Eva Travis kills kept the margin at four (18-14) forcing another Matador timeout. A kill by Okolo the fueled a 9-4 run by the Matadors that put CSUN back in front 23-22. A pair of Smith kills set the Matadors up with set points at 24-23 and 25-24 before UCSB kills saved both. CSUN had two more set points at 27-26 and 29-28 but the Gauchos held on each time before claiming the final three points in a 31-29 win.

CSUN heads out on the road for its next two Big West matches, visiting UC Irvine on Oct. 4 and Cal State Fullerton on Oct. 5.

- CSUN closes out its season-long, six-match homestand with a 3-3 record.
- With the win, UCSB improves to 5-9 (1-1 Big West) while improving to 47-10 in the all-time series against CSUN.
