CSUN Leads from Start to Finish in 88-66 Win at Delaware

NEWARK, Del.---CSUN Men's Basketball posted a wire-to-wire 88-66 victory at Delaware on Saturday at the Bob Carpenter Center. Larry Hughes II once again led the way in scoring, pouring in 23 points to go with seven rebounds and five steals while Joshua O'Garro added 18 points and eight rebounds. The forward tandem of Davius Loury and Mahmoud Fofana chipped in with 12 points each in the double-digit win.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED
Making the long cross country trip to Newark on Saturday afternoon, the Matadors jumped on the Blue Hens early and never looked back. CSUN scored the game's first five points and soon led by a 12-5 margin after a Loury three, one of his three made in the first half. Loury buried another three moments later while Evans made one himself at the 12:31 mark, putting the Matadors ahead 17-9. CSUN would give Delaware fits on the offensive end all afternoon, holding Blue Hens to 34 percent shooting in the first half. A Grady Lewis block near the eight minute mark soon led to a Josiah Davis dunk in transition, forcing a Delaware timeout as the lead stood at 29-17. Shortly thereafter, CSUN went on a 10-0 run for a 39-20 lead as four different Matadors scored points during the stretch. Hughes hit another three for CSUN with 2:46 to play, stretching the lead further to 44-23. The half closed with two free throws from Fofana to put CSUN ahead 48-28 at the break.Â

Out of intermission, the Matadors picked up five consecutive defensive stops while they scored the first eight to go up by a 56-28 margin. O'Garro would pick up a block at the 15:55 mark before scoring on the other end, forcing another timeout as the score read 61-30. CSUN held as big a lead as 35 points in the game (77-42) when Hughes hit another from long range with 10:00 remaining in the game. Delaware put together a 10-0 run moments later, but the Matadors would not led the lead slip much further than that margin the rest of the way. Davis threw down another dunk shortly after an O'Garro steal with 6:12 left to go while Evans made back-to-back jumpers late to punctuate the victory.Â

"The defense, that was incredible. Especially, in the first half, our guys really locked in. It was one of our best defensive performances we've had and we haven't been able to sustain that into the second half, so I challenged them at halftime. They went out and played together on the defensive end for the first time in the second half and it was really fun to watch."

NOTES OF THE GAME
- Â CSUN improves to 6-5 on the season and Delaware falls to 3-7.Â
- The Matadors finished shooting at 50.8 percent while making 11-of-23 threes (47.8 percent) and 11-of-14 free throws (78.6 percent). On the flip side, the Blue Hens were held to 39.6 percent shooting overall while hitting 10-of-33 threes (33.3 percent) and 14-of-18 free throws (77.8 percent).Â
- CSUN out-rebounded Delaware 38-30 and led the way in points in the paint, 36-18. The Matadors also had a 17-4 edge in points off turnovers
- The victory was CSUN's first true road win on the East Coast since beating James Madison 84-70 on Dec. 18, 2000.Â
- Loury finished 4-of-5 from three to go with six rebounds.Â
- O'Garro made 3-of-5 from long range while Hughes also made three on the day.
- Evans scored seven points on 3-of-5 shooting in 12 minutes. Â
- Jordan Brinson came off the bench to dish out six assists against no turnovers.Â
- Saturday was the first-ever meeting between CSUN and Delaware.Â
