NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball's Larry Hughes II received his first career Big West Player of the Week award on Monday, as announced by the league office. Hughes led CSUN in scoring, averaging 24.0 points per game in Matador victories over Fresno State and Delaware last week.Â

Originally from Saint Louis, Mo., Hughes came up big in CSUN's two wins last week, shooting 51.5 percent overall from the floor to go with six made threes. Hughes was also a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line and went on to average 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 steals and 2.0 assists per game.Â
Hughes began last week with one of his top performances of his collegiate career in an 89-87 home win over Fresno State on Wednesday. Pouring in a game-high 25 points, Hughes made a career-high 10 made field goals on 16 attempts while he added three steals to lift CSUN to victory. Hughes scored 11 of his 23 points in the second half including six points over the final 3:43 of the game as CSUN eventually pulled out a two-point win on a last second three from Josiah Davis. Hughes' 25 points were two points shy of a career high in scoring.Â
Following the win over Fresno State, Hughes and the Matadors made the cross country trip to Delaware on Saturday. Hughes showed little effect from the long trip as he went on to post one of his top all around efforts this season in an 88-66 victory. In 34 minutes, Hughes scored a game-high 23 points on 7-of-17 shooting to go with 6-of-6 makes from the free throw line. Hughes pulled down seven rebounds and recorded five steals, both new season highs while he also had three assists and one block in the double-digit win.Â
In what has been a breakout first season with CSUN, Hughes has topped the Matadors with a career-best scoring average of 18.8 points, which ranks third-best in the Big West. Hughes has also recorded the 18th-most three-point field goals made in the nation (38) and the 19th-most three-point makes per game (3.5) while he has shot 43.2 percent overall from beyond the arc. In addition, Hughes is ranked second in the Big West in steals per game (2.1) and ninth in free throw percentage (82.5).Â
Hughes is the first Matador to earn the Big West Player of the Week award since Marcus Adams Jr. on February 24, 2025.Â
CSUN returns to Premier America Credit Union Arena on Friday when the Matadors face La Sierra at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.Â
