CSUN Drops First Two Games of CSUN Matador Classic
2/14/2025 7:35:00 PM | Softball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif -- CSUN Softball kicked off its home slate of matches with the CSUN Matador Classic today at Matador Diamond. The Matadors played Pacific in a doubleheader today and dropped both games. In the first match, CSUN fell 4-2 despite a complete game from Lauryn Carranco. In the ladder of the two games, the Matadors fell 10-3 on a late innings surge by the Tigers.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Game 1:Â
Carranco struck out two batters in the top half of the first while allowing just a single to kick off the tournament. In the bottom half of the first, CSUN got on the scoreboard with small-ball tactics and clutch base-hits. The first batter, Mikayla Carman reached on a fielding error. Gizella Vargas Sandoval then hit a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner. After a strikeout, Jerzie Liana brought Carman home with a single to right field, making it 1-0 in favor of the Matadors.
Â
After the RBI by Liana, Kylie Galindo singled through the left side to put two runners on base. Alexa Landeros then walked, setting the stage for Larissa Flores, who promptly singled to third base, advancing all the runners and putting another run on the board for the Matadors, making it 2-0. The inning would end on a CSUN strikeout.
Â
The score would remain 2-0 until the top of the fifth. The Tigers would get one back after Olivia Silvestre doubled with a runner on base with no outs. Emma Dazell singled to center to tie things up at two apiece. After a fielder's choice, Jayleen Scott singled to right center to give the Tigers the lead.Â
Â
Pacific would add one more in the top of the seventh as the Matadors offense couldn't break through against the Tiger pitching. Pacific took game one.Â
Â
Game 2:Â
Silvestre started the game off with a single to center field. She stole second and was brought home by an Emma Dazell single to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead. CSUN struck back and tied the game in the bottom of the second. After Landeros walked, a grounder advanced her to second. She then stole third. Makenzi Padilla brought her home with a single to centerfield, her first RBI of the young season.Â
Â
The game would remain at 1-1 until the bottom half of the third. With one out, Alexis Chavez singled up the middle. Tiara Westbrook then grounded out to the pitcher, but it worked like a sacrifice as Chavez advanced to second. Jerzie Liana was the next batter, and the sophomore from Hawai'i brought Chavez home with a single down the left field line, giving the Matadors a 2-1 lead.
Â
The score remained 2-1 until the top of the fifth. Unfortunately, here is where the game got away from the Matadors. Emily Budelli tripled with the bases loaded and Dazell brought her home to put a four spot on the board for the Tigers.Â
Â
CSUN responded back in the bottom of the fifth with a run of its own. There were two on, one out for Liana who reached on a fielder's choice. The runner was out at second but the lead runner scored on a throwing error by the defense, making it a 5-3 game.
Â
After CSUN cut the lead back to two, Pacific then had another solid run scoring inning, as the Tigers put up four in the sixth. Pacific had five consecutive singles to open up the inning. Pacific would add one more in the top seventh, as the team from Stockton won both games of the day.
Â
NEWS AND NOTES
"We still gotta keep finding it, there were certain things that we did well, but we gotta hit better, pitch better and play better defense. It's still early in the season, there's stuff we got to figure out, and we will. We face Seattle University tomorrow and we will make the necessary adjustments. It's not our standards at the moment, but we will get back to that."
Â
UP NEXT
Quick turnaround for the Matadors as CSUN heads right back to the diamond tomorrow to take on Seattle U at 10:00 a.m. The game will be live-streamed on ESPN+ with Alex Naveja on the call.
