SANTA CLARA, Calif.---CSUN Baseball dropped the rubber game of its weekend series at Santa Clara, falling 8-3 on Sunday at Schott Stadium. Colton Boardman drove in two of the three runs and Roberto Gonzalez scored twice on the day. The Matadors were unable to overcome a five-run Bronco first while they were held to four hits offensively.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors jumped on Bronco pitching in the opening frame with both Gonzalez and Elijah Fairchild earning a pair of walks before Boardman delivered a two-RBI double to right for an early CSUN 2-0 lead. The Matadors eventually loaded the bases with one out before reliever Nick Fontaine induced an inning-ending double play.
From there, the tide would change in the home half of the first. The Broncos quickly loaded the bases with one out, setting the table for Malcolm Williams to knock in two runs with a double. Dylan Joyce followed with a two-run single before a bunt single from Thomas Ferroggiaro resulted in a CSUN throwing error, putting the Matadors in a 5-2 hole.
Out of the Matador bullpen, Noah Rinehart gave the team a lift with shutout frames over the second and third innings, but the Broncos broke through again in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Mateo Garcia.
CSUN would get that run back in the top of the fifth without the benefit of a hit. Gonzalez walked to start the inning before advancing on two wild pitches and scoring on a balk to pull CSUN to within 6-3.
However, the Matador bats could not pull closer for the remainder of the day. CSUN threatened with runners at second and third base with two outs in the sixth, but reliever Max Bayles fanned Gonzalez for the third out. Bayles went on to retire the side in order in the seventh before stranding another Matador runner in the eighth.
Santa Clara picked up two insurance runs in the seventh on a two-run homer from Joyce, pushing the lead to 8-3.
In the top of the ninth, Gonzalez legged out a one-out single, but reliever Caden Wooster retired the final two batters to seal the win. Â

NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"Not getting good starts on Sunday will always lead to frustrating weekends. We fell behind early and couldn't get ourselves to crawl back into the game. The best part is the bus ride home will be long, "
Â
UP NEXT
CSUN opens its home schedule next Thursday when they Matadors take on BYU in the first of a three-game series. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. under the lights for the first-ever time at Robert J. Hiegert Field.
