CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif --- CSUN Softball fell in its lone game on Saturday against Nevada by a score of 5-3. Jerzie Liana led the offensive attack with two runs batted in. Tiara Westbrook went 3-4 and drove a run in herself. Mikayla Carman had two hits and two runs scored. Lauryn Carranco pitched a complete game with four strikeouts.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first inning, CSUN got on the board first. Carman started off the game with a single to right field. Gizella Vargas Sandoval sacrificed herself to move Carman over to second. CSUN's small ball tactics proved effective as Westbrook promptly singled to center field, scoring Carman from second to make it a 1-0 ballgame early on.
Â
Nevada didn't take too long to tie things up. The Wolfpack began the bottom half of the first with a hit by pitch. After a flyout, Aaliyah Jenkins walked, putting two runners aboard with one out. After the next batter struck out looking, Haylee Engelbrecht singled up the middle, scoring the runner from second and making it a 1-1 game.
Â
Flashing forward to the third inning, with one out, Carman singled again, this time to center field. Vargas Sandoval reached on a fielder's choice. Westbrook singled to get aboard as the Matadors now had two on and two out. The next batter, Liana, doubled down the left-field line, scoring the runner from second. This made the score 2-1 in favor of CSUN.
Â
Nevada responded again quickly. Haley Painter hit a ball over the fence with two runners on, scoring three and giving the Wolfpack a 4-2 advantage through three innings.
Â
Nevada would add to its lead in the bottom of the fourth via a sacrifice fly.Â
Â
CSUN tried to chip away at the lead in the fifth. Liana came up with the bases loaded and scored a run via a fielder's choice. The Matadors though left two runners on base in the inning. The fifth inning ended with the score reading 5-3. Nevada held off CSUN in the late innings to pick up the win.Â
