NORMAN, Okla.---CSUN Baseball fell 9-0 at No. 16 Oklahoma in the first of a weekend series on Friday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Leadoff hitter Roberto Gonzalez tallied two of the Matadors' nine hits on the day. CSUN's offense threatened throughout but could not break through against the Sooner pitching staff.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The 16th-ranked Sooners broke through early, scoring on a leadoff home run from Jason Walk in the first. CSUN though kept Oklahoma off the scoreboard over the rest of the inning with starter Ryan Halamicek pitching around a one-out walk.
CSUN looked to answer in the top of the second on a leadoff single from Cameron Calvillo, but Oklahoma starter Kyson Witherspoon retired the next three batters.
The second inning started a stretch of three straight innings where the Matadors put a leadoff batter on the base paths, however, they were turned back each time. In the third, Royce Clayton, Jr. opened with a leadoff double only to be caught stealing while Andrew Becker and Colton Boardman were stranded later in the inning after collecting singles. Calvillo was also stranded at second base in the fourth. Gonzalez would triple as well in the fifth with one out but remained at third to end the frame.
The lead remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when Oklahoma added to its lead on an RBI triple from Easton Carmichael. Halamicek later induced a double play in the fourth, but Carmichael scored on the play for a 3-0 lead.
Halamicek kept CSUN in the game into the sixth, but the Sooners pushed across another run on a one-out RBI single by Sam Christiansen. After Logan Miller took over for Halamicek, Dayton Tockey picked up an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-0.
Oklahoma broke open the game in the bottom of the seventh with a big four-run inning on just one hit. The four runs scored all with two outs as a costly wild pitch along with a walk and hit batter opened the door for Kyle Branch to pick up a bases clearing three-run double.
Perhaps CSUN's best chance to score came in the top of the eighth when Gonzalez singled to start and pinch hitter Jarren Sanderson drew a walk with nobody out. However, no runs came across after the next three batters were retired.
