HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1 vs. Montana
Â
CSUN won via the run rule versus the Grizzlies. Here is how it went down.
Â
Presley Jantzi was the second batter of the game for Montana, and she got the scoring started with a home run to left center for the early 1-0 lead. That would be all of the scoring for the Grizzlies in the first inning and also the game.Â
Â
Flash forward to the bottom of the second inning where CSUN struck back. Kylie Galindo started off the inning being hit by a pitch. She was then sacrificed over to second base before advancing to third on a wild pitch.
Â
Alexis Chavez walked to make it first and third with one out. After a pop out made it two outs, Chavez attempted to steal second, allowing Kylie Galindo the chance to steal home plate, making it a 1-1 game without CSUN recording a hit.
Â
In the third inning, CSUN added to its lead. Mikayla Carman singled to kick things off. Gizella Vargas Sandoval hit a ground ball for an out but Carman advanced. Carman then reached third on a wild pitch. Tiara Westbrook walked to make it runners on the corners with one out.
Â
Jerzie Liana would then double to left field, scoring Carman, making it a 2-1 game. Galindo, the next batter, brought the runner on third home via sac fly, as CSUN carried a 3-1 lead through three innings.
Â
The score would remain until the bottom of the fourth. To kick off the home fourth, Chavez doubled to left field. After Larissa Flores flew out, Raegan Jackson singled to third base. Jackson then stole second. The next batter, Carman, singled up the middle and scored both runners on base to make it a 5-1 ballgame.
Â
Flash forward to the bottom of the fifth. Westbrook opened up the inning with a single to right center, however she was thrown out at second looking to extend her hit to a double. Up next was Liana who walked. Two batters later, Landeros sent a ball over the wall for a two-run home run. That blast put the Matadors up 7-1.Â
Â
In the sixth inning, with two outs, Carman singled through the left side. Jadyn Nielsen would then triple to right field, making it an 8-1 Matador lead. The game would end via the bat of Westbrook. The transfer from Oregon State singled up the middle and Nielsen scored, ending the game via a run rule.
Â
Game Two vs Fairleigh Dickinson
CSUN struck in the first inning with a pair of back-to-back doubles. First by Westbrook with two outs in the inning. She was brought home by Liana, making it a 1-0 game through one.
Â
FDU tied the game in the top of the third, via consecutive singles and runners advancing on an error. The game read 1-1 until CSUN batted in the bottom half.Â
Â
Liana reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, as Rhea Furtado scored. This made the score 2-1.Â
Â
The scoreboard read 2-1 all the way until the top of the seventh. CSUN tried to hold the lead for three outs, but it was not meant to be. FDU scored the game-tying and go-ahead runs on a throwing error with two runners on, making it 3-2 in favor of the Knights.Â
Â
In the bottom of the seventh CSUN was down to its last three outs. The Matadors responded with a small ball approach that led to a third run. With one out, Carman walked. Vargas Sandoval then singled to left field to put two runners on base. After a lineout, CSUN was down to their final out. Liana promptly singled up the middle, scoring Carman to tie the game.CSUN couldn't bring another home, as the game headed to extras.Â
Â
Neither team could get runs across in the eighth.
Â
In the ninth, FDU doubled with the ghost runner on base, making it 4-3. CSUN did prevent any more runs from scoring, as the Matadors headed to the bottom of the ninth down a run.
Â
Unfortunately for CSUN, it couldn't get the ghost runner home as the Matadors fell in extras to FDU.Â
Â
NEWS AND NOTES
- With the two results, CSUN is now 5-12 on the season.
- Carman and Westbrook had hits in both games.
- Carranco now has a 3.40 ERA on the year as her record is 3-5.
- Isabella Alonso earned her second win on the season.
- Landeros hit her first home run of the year.
"I think in game one we did a good job overall capitalizing both offensively and defensively. We had a great pitching and defensive performance. In game two it was a team loss, we left 10 people on base. We had miscues on the bases and didn't come through when we needed to. We have to be better, and with the short turnaround it gives us that opportunity."
Â
UP NEXT:
CSUN plays these two teams again in the same order. The Matadors will take on Montana at 9 a.m. and FDU at 11:00 a.m. Both games will be livestreamed on ESPN+.
