SAN DIEGO, Calif -- CSUN Softball dropped consecutive games on the road against San Diego State and No. 3 Oklahoma Thursday afternoon at the SDSU Softball Stadium. CSUN was defeated by SDSU, 8-1, and No. 3 Oklahoma, 7-2.
Â
VS San Diego StateÂ
Â
Pitching was the story early on in this showdown versus the Aztecs as only one batter had reached for the first inning and a half.
Â
CSUN threatened with two consecutive walks in the top of the third, but unfortunately the Matadors had two outs. A ground out by Gizella Vargas Sandoval halted the runners, keeping it scoreless through the first two and a half innings.
Â
Fast forward to the fourth, after two consecutive outs, Kylie Galindo singled to left field to get the Matadors their first base runner of the game. The very next batter, Sydney Freijanes singled up the middle to give the Matadors two runners on base. Alexa Landeros then brought home CSUN's first run of the season on a single down the right field line as the Matadors took a 1-0 lead in the fourth.
Â
In the bottom half of the fourth, SDSU struck back with a rally of its own. The opening runner for the inning reached on a fielding error, but CSUN was able to get the next batter out on a groundout. However, the Aztecs scratched off four hits in a row, three singles and one double, to take a 3-1 lead heading into the fifth.
Â
CSUN went quietly in the top of the fifth, and the Aztecs added to their lead in the bottom half. A couple singles with an out to start the inning set up a three-run homer by Angie Yellen to give SDSU a 7-1 lead. SDSU added another run in the bottom of the sixth via a Jade Ignacio RBI single. CSUN entered the seventh down 8-1, looking for an epic comeback. It wasn't to be for the Matadors however, as CSUN went down in order and dropped its first game of the season.
Â
Vs Oklahoma
Â
Both teams were scoreless and hitless until the top of the third. Vinessa Nunez doubled down the left field line for CSUN's first hit of the game, bringing Reagan Jackson up with a runner in scoring position. Jackson put the ball in play as she hit it to the opposing shortstop with Nunez running on contact. Gabbie Garcia of the Sooners flubbed the ground ball and the play resulted in a fielding error, as Nunez rounded third to score, giving CSUN a 1-0 lead in the third.
Â
The Sooners answered back in the bottom half of the inning, however, as Abigale Dayton homered to right center, tying the game.
Â
In the fourth inning, after a groundout, Tiara Westbrook singled up the middle for her first hit of the year. Galindo walked as CSUN now had two on, one out. Landeros then hit a single to right-center, tallying her second RBI in two games as the Matadors took the lead at 2-1, heading into the bottom half of the fourth. Pitcher Isabella Alonso then got the Sooners out on a 1-2-3 inning.
Â
In the fifth, CSUN didn't have much going on as the first three batters were retired. In the bottom half of the inning, Dayton of Oklahoma walked and then Ella Parker doubled to center, scoring Dayton and tying the game at two apiece. After getting the next batter to pop out, Kasidi Pickering tripled to right center, brought the runner on second home, and scored on a throwing error. That play would give the Sooners a two-run lead at 4-2.
Â
Oklahoma would add three more in the bottom of the sixth, making the lead 7-2. The Matadors ran out of time to catch up in this one, making the Sooners the victor.
Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
CSUN hits the road again, this time to Fullerton for the Easton Classic. CSUN will take on IU Indy and Utah Tech on Saturday, at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. respectively.
