FULLERTON, Calif -- CSUN Softball tallied a win against Utah Tech, 4-3, in eight innings, and suffered a defeat to IU Indy 5-3, Saturday Afternoon at the Easton Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton. In the win against Utah Tech, Lauryn Carranco pitched all eight innings, only allowing two runs and striking out five. Kaylee Escutia led the way offensively in game two with two RBI's. Reagan Jackson scored the winning run.Â
Â
In the early game, CSUN was defeated by IU Indy by a score of 5-3. Mikayla Carman led the way with two hits and two RBI's. Gizella Vargas Sandoval tallied two hits as well. Elisa Gulfin pitched a scoreless two innings in relief.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1 vs IU Indy
CSUN found themselves fighting from behind as the Matadors gave up five runs in the first five innings to the Jaguars. The Matadors hit into double plays in the second and the third, which cost them run-scoring opportunities. After the five innings and down five, CSUN started to climb its way back into the game.
Â
In the top of the sixth, Larissa Flores singled to open up the inning. She stole second and a Rhea Furtado groundout advanced Flores to third. The freshman from Artesia scored on sac-fly from Kylie Galindo, getting the Matadors on the board. Gizella Vargas Sandoval flied out to end the inning.
Â
In the top of the seventh with only three outs to work with, CSUN wasn't done yet. After Alexa Landeros fouled out, Vinessa Nunez walked. Jadyn Nielsen popped out as the Matadors were down to their last out. Jackson then was hit by a pitch, putting two runners on base. Carman then tripled, scoring both runners on base to make it just a two-run game. However, the game would end on the next at bat as Flores flew out to center field.
Â
Game 2 vs Utah Tech
After a scoreless first inning, Landeros singled to shortstop. Escutia reached on an error in the next at-bat, and Landeros moved to third. Landeros would score on the next batter, as a Nunez grounder sent Landeros home, making it a 1-0 ballgame in the second inning.
Â
In the top of the third with one out, Tiara Westbrook walked. Isabella Bastien pinch ran for Westbrook and she advanced to second on the next play via a single from Vargas Sandoval. Bastien moved over to third base on a fielders choice, and then scored on the next at-bat when Escutia singled through the left-side, making it a 2-0 game.
Â
The Trailblazers got one back in the bottom half of the third via an RBI single. Carranco did strike out the last batter of the inning to halt a comeback.
Â
The game remained 2-1 until the top of the fifth. Westbrook began the inning by being hit by a pitch and she advanced to second on a groundout. Landeros then singled to the right side and moved Westbrook over to third. The next batter, Escutia, reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Westbrook to score, adding one back to the lead at 3-1.
Â
In the bottom of the fifth, the Trailblazers tied the game. A single, walk, double and a single evened up the score at three apiece. The game would remain 3-3 through seven innings, as the game went to extras.Â
Â
In the top of the eighth, CSUN got its lead back. Jackson was placed on second to begin the inning, she stole third with one out and scored when the throw to third sailed into left field. Utah Tech would retire the next two batters but nonetheless, CSUN had a lead needing three outs to win.
Â
Carranco completed her great performance on the mound in the bottom half of the inning. She got the first batter to strike out. Even after the next batter singled, Carranco halted the rally by getting the Trailblazers to ground out and fly out to end the game and seal the win for the Matadors.
