3/1/2025 3:05:00 PM | Softball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif --- CSUN Softball swept its doubleheader on the second day of the CSUN Champions Classic on Matador Diamond on Saturday afternoon. CSUN took the first game via a shutout versus Montana, 4-0. CSUN won the second game against Fairleigh Dickinson, 9-1 via a walk-off run rule single by Mikayla Carman.
Â
Lauryn Carranco pitched a complete game shutout in game one while Isabella Alonso threw a five inning, one hitter in game two.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One vs. MontanaÂ
Â
It was a pitcher's duel throughout most of the first game of the day. Carranco got the game going by striking out the leadoff hitter and retiring the side in order in the first. The pitcher from Clovis struck out another in the second inning while only facing four batters. In the third, Carranco tallied another strikeout and got out of the inning after allowing a single to the first batter.
Â
In the fourth, Carranco's good pitching continued, striking out the first batter and retiring the side in order yet again. In the fourth it was more of the same, as the Matadors leader in ERA got the Grizzlies out 1-2-3.Â
Â
There was no scoring till the sixth inning for either side. In the bottom half for CSUN, with one out, Kylie Galindo kicked things off with a single up the middle. Alexa Landeros followed with a double to right center. Now the Matadors had runners at second and third.
Â
Alexis Chavez broke the scoreless tie with a single to right field, scoring both the runners on base, making it a 2-0 game. Kaylee Escutia then singled to right field, putting two runners on base yet again.
Â
Larissa Flores bunted the runners over. Following Flores was Jadyn Nielsen. Nielsen singled to third base, bringing two more runners home in the process.
Â
CSUN ended the sixth with a 4-0 lead, as the Matadors just needed three more outs to secure the victory.
Â
And secure the victory they did. After allowing a lead-off double, Carranco retired the next three batters, ending the game.
Â
Game Two vs. Fairleigh DickinsonÂ
Erika Barela of the Knights brought home the first run of the game when she singled in Madison Rishel. That kicked off scoring in the top of the first.
Â
The 1-0 lead would remain until the bottom half of the second.
In the second, Carman reached on an error by the first baseman with the bases loaded and two runs scored in the process. The second inning ended with CSUN taking a 2-1 lead.
In the third inning, Galindo stepped up to the plate with no one on base. She promptly drilled a ball over the wall for her first home run of the year, making it 3-1.
Â
Later that inning, Flores came up with the bases loaded. The freshman didn't miss a beat, she tripled to right field and cleared the bases to make it a 6-1 ballgame. The next batter, Nielsen reached base. Flores would end up scoring on a double steal, as CSUN put up a seven on the scoreboard.
Â
The score would remain 7-1 until the bottom of the fifth. In the fifth, with Jizzell Ruiz on base, Escutia doubled to left field, scoring Ruiz.
Â
The game would end via a run rule when Carman singled to right field and Escutia scored, making it 9-1 through five innings.

NEWS AND NOTES
Â
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"There were some things we got to keep working on, but I think we really came up big today. We came up big in key spots and two really good pitching performances today. We had pretty good defense and timely hitting in both games. We had some better at-bats and better adjustments in both games. Overall, I am really proud of the team today."
