CSUN Falls to LMU to Complete Road Stretch
3/11/2025 10:17:00 PM | Baseball
LOS ANGELES, Calif.---CSUN Baseball closed its seven-game road stretch with a 7-1 loss at LMU on Tuesday evening at Page Stadium. Roberto Gonzalez drove in the Matadors' lone run and picked up a hit on the night. The Lions scored six of their seven runs over the first two innings and held CSUN at bay the rest of the way.
HOW IT HAPPENED
LMU jumped on CSUN in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on three consecutive walks to open the inning. After CSUN freshman Nicholas Santivanez struck out the next batter, Nate Savoie stepped to the plate next and hit a grand slam to right center for a 4-0 lead. Just two pitches later, DJ Ghiorso followed with a solo home run of his own to extend the lead to five runs before Santivanez struck out the next two batters to finally end the inning.
CSUN would find itself in a similar scenario in the top of the second when Elijah Fairchild, Xavier Rios and Andrew Gauna each drew one-out walks to load the bases. Two batters later, Gonzalez drew a two-out walk to force in a run and cut the lead to 5-1. However, the Matadors settled for the one run when Jonah Johnson struck out Colton Boardman for the third out.
The Lions tacked on another run quickly in the bottom of the second on an RBI from Beau Akeney. CSUN's Jason Davis was called in to take over on the mound with nobody out and two runners on base in the second inning but managed to limit the daman by retiring three straight batters.
Davis would strike out two batters in a 1-2-3 third inning and fan another to start the fourth inning before exiting the game in that inning. LMU would add another run in the fourth though via a two-out RBI single from Akeney.
The Matador bats would be silenced for most of the night with seven Lion pitchers holding CSUN to two hits. Gonzalez would break up the no hitter in the top of the fifth with an infield single, but the next three batters were retired on groundouts.
CSUN threatened in the top of the ninth after a catcher's interference call followed by a Gauna single to left field put runners at first and second base. Jarren Sanderson followed with a walk to load the bases, but LMU's Zack Mack sat down the next two batters to end the game.
NOTES OF THE GAME
CSUN returns home this weekend to host UC Irvine in a three-game series at Robert J. Hiegert Field. The opener is set for Friday at 5:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
