CSUN Defeats North Texas, 4-2 in Rain Shortened Match

NORTHRIDGE, Calif -- CSUN Women's Tennis team was victorious against the North Texas Mean Green, 4-2 in a rain shortened dual Tuesday afternoon at the Matador Tennis Complex. All four points earned this in this match were earned on the singles courts early. Both teams agreed on scratching the doubles portion of this contest due to weather concerns.

Yuliia Zhytelna, Angela Ho, Victoria Santibanez Luna, and Emma Goodman all each won their singles' bouts. Santibanez Luna and Goodman have now won three singles contests in a row. The game was tied at two apiece before the Matadors won the last two singles competitions.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The match kicked off an No. 1 singles as Zhytelna defeated Gianna Pielet in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Eyes then turned to court No. 2 as the Matadors earned the second point of the match when Ho bested Stanislava Shulzhenko in straight sets as well. The junior from San Francisco won, 6-3, 6-2 to give CSUN the early 2-0 lead.

"Despite the challenges of the rain, I had to really focus on my game and trust it." Ho said. "The team energy was high and that definitely helped us play better."

CSUN was defeated at No. 6 singles and No. 4 singles which led to a tied score heading into the final two matches.

Goodman picked the Matadors back up. She won her match against Lilly Schultz 6-2, 7-6 (5) to give CSUN a 3-2 lead.

"I think as a team we showed a strong ability to adapt and overcome all the adversity thrown at us today." Goodman said. "The energy was very high coming from both our opponents and us, but I think we fought so well today."

Santibanez Luna came up in the clutch today for CSUN. The duel came down to her court as she was the only match to go into three sets. The redshirt senior from Sonora, Mexico overcame Lou Chalard 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, earning the fourth and final point for the Matadors.

"I am very proud of the girls and their adaptability today given the conditions. Santibanez Luna said. "We're getting closer and closer to a level we know we can be at. It's all great momentum leading us to Cal Poly on Sunday."
