CSUN Heads North for Midweek Games at Saint Mary's, USF

GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUNÂ Baseball makes the journey to Northern California for a pair of midweek games this week. The Matadors visit Saint Mary's on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before facing the University of San Francisco on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
ABOUT LAST WEEKEND
CSUN suffered a series loss to Hawai'i despite holding leads in every game of the series. The Matadors would take game one 15-10 behind a 16-hit attack, which included home runs from Roberto Gonzalez, Matthew Pena and Andrew Becker along with a four-hit game from Kyle Panganiban. In game two, Hawai'i took advantage of a crucial error in the seventh inning to hit a grand slam in an eventual 9-3 victory. CSUN would lead by a 10-4 margin in the rubber game, but Hawai'i scored 10 runs in the top of the ninth to hand the Matadors a 14-10 defeat and clinch the series.
OFFENSE VS. HAWAI'I
CSUN received several contributions from a variety of places in the Hawai'i series. Junior Cameron Calvillo earned a spot start at third base in the middle game of the series and went on to produce five hits in just eight at bats, totaling two RBI with a run scored and a stolen base. Sophomore shortstop Trent Abel only had three hits coming into the Hawai'i series before going 5-of-9 in the three games along with a team-high five runs scored. At the top of the order, senior Roberto Gonzalez hit a leadoff home run in the game one of the series and charted four total hits and three RBI. In Sunday series finale, CSUN got two big swings from freshman Xavier Rios who homered twice and registered five RBI. As a team, CSUN slashed .317/.388/.519 in the series against a Hawai'i team leading the Big West in ERA.
MATADOR LEADERS
CSUN's young lineup has been led in the early going this season by true freshman Andrew Becker, who tops the Matadors with a .342 batting average at the plate. Becker has totaled 26 hits, 15 runs scored, 13 RBI and four stolen bases to go with a team-high eight multi-hit games and five multi-RBI games. CSUN's redshirt freshman Kyle Panganiban has moved into the team lead in runs scored (17) and base hits (27) to go with two homers, 13 RBI and a .303 batting average. Sophomore Matthew Pena still remains the CSUN leader in home runs (4) and RBI (15). On the mound, sophomore Ryan Halamicek has racked up a team-high 32 strikeouts as the team's Friday night starter while junior Diego Gutierrez has 30 strikeouts over 36.2 innings to go with two wins and a 6.38 ERA.
HALL ON THE MOUND
CSUN will turn the baseball over to junior right hander Hayden Hall on Tuesday versus Saint Mary's. Over his two seasons with CSUN, Hall has served exclusively as a relief pitcher, totaling 29 appearances and racking up five wins in 34.1 innings of work. In 2024, Hall registered a 4.61 ERA and made the second-most appearances on the mound with 20. Hall has pitched in nine games in relief this season, accumulating six strikeouts.
SCOUTING SAINT MARY'S
The Gaels are 13-14 overall on the season and 1-2 in WCC play after dropping two of three to San Francisco over the weekend. The team has enjoyed an 8-3 record at Louis Guisto Field on the year. After finishing third in the WCC and winning 34 total games in 2024, SMC was picked to finish tied for third in the conference this year. As a team, the Gaels lead the WCC in batting at a .285 clip while they are 21st in the nation in fielding percentage. A Preseason All-WCCÂ selection, Ryan Pierce is batting .303 at the plate with five homers and 21 RBI. Eddie Madrigal leads the Gaels in batting overall (.380), runs (24), homers (8) and RBI (31). On the mound, Saint Mary's will start Adam Enyart against CSUN, who comes in with nine innings pitched, eight strikeouts and a 13.00 ERA.
Series History: CSUNÂ leads Saint Mary's 14-8 in the all-time series. The teams matched up in 2022 in Moraga with CSUN sweeping a three-game series.
SCOUTING SAN FRANCISCO
The Dons hold a 14-14 overall record with a 4-2 WCC record. USF has posted series wins over Santa Clara and Saint Mary's over the past two weekends. At Benedetti Diamond, San Francisco sports a 9-9 record on the campaign. Last year, USF finished with a 21-34 overall record and in ninth place in the WCC with a 4-20 league record. On the year, USF leads the WCC with 37 homers while the team leads the nation with 29 double plays. The offense is led by Patrick Keighran who is slashing .329/.495/.598 to go with four homers and 24 RBi. Trevor Harmon and TJ Rogers each have four homers apiece while Eddison Esquivel has five. Rogers tops USF in RBI with 27 followed by Keighran with 24 RBI.
Series History:Â The Matadors hold an 18-4 edge over San Francisco in a series that dates back to the 1996 season. CSUN swept USF in the teams' last series in Northridge during the shortened 2020 season.
