GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball opens its Big West schedule this weekend with a three-game series at No. 16 UC Santa Barbara. The opener is set for Friday at 4:05 p.m. before the series continues on Saturday at 3:05 p.m. and concludes on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
FOR STARTERS
The Matadors (2-7) are playing their second top-20 opponent in as many weekends. Three of CSUN's first four series will be against teams currently in the top 100 in RPI while UC Irvine (No. 49 RPI ) looms next weekend in a Big West series at Robert J. Hiegert Field. CSUN is also in the middle of a seven-game road stretch, which will culminate this Tuesday at LMU in a midweek game. From there, CSUN will play four consecutive at home before returning to the road for five of its next eight games.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN made its first-ever trip to No. 16 Oklahoma to take on the Sooners in a three-game series last weekend in Norman. The Sooners would control the first two games, winning 9-0 and 10-2 before receiving a battle in the finale and pulling out a 3-2 win. Diego Gutierrez gave CSUN a strong start on the mound in game three, tossing 5.2 innings and only allowing a run on four hits. Gutierrez left the game with a lead before Oklahoma rallied for two runs in the seventh and held on the rest of the way. Despite the outcome in the series, the Matadors had runners on base seemingly all weekend but could not cash in on opportunities as they left 33 total base runners including 11 in the finale.
TOP MATADOR PERFORMERS
Freshman Colton Boardman has been a constant on the base paths thus far this season. Boardman stretched his team-best on-base streak to nine games last weekend while he leads the team with nine hits, six runs scored and three doubles to go with three RBI and a .273 batting average. Fellow freshman Andrew Becker has also been strong at the plate in the early going, hitting .313 along with hits in four straight games and three total RBI on the year. Senior Roberto Gonzalez comes into the weekend with an eight-game on-base streak to go with holding a .286 batting average while junior Cameron Calvillo is batting .300 with one homer and two RBI. Sophomore Matthew Pena tops the team in homers (2) and RBI (10).
On the pitching side, junior Diego Gutierrez leads CSUN with 13 strikeouts over 14.1 innings pitched to go with a 1-1 record and a 5.65 ERA. Out of the bullpen, sophomore Logan Miller has eight strikeouts along with a 4.76 ERA and a .190 batting average against while sophomore Gabriel Hernandez has a team-best 1.50 ERA with six strikeouts over six innings of work.
MANY, MANY NEW FACES
Through three weekends of 2025, CSUN has already had 17 total players make their debut with the team. In addition to the new faces on the roster, 12 of those 17 debuting players are making their first appearance at the Division I level this season. CSUN's everyday lineup went through a near complete overhaul form last season as just two players from last season's roster have started six or more times this season, with those two returning players, Roberto Gonzalez and Matthew Pena, primarily serving as reserves in 2024. Sophomore Ryan Halamicek, the lone returning weekend starter from last season, has served as the Friday starter this year after holding the Saturday role a year ago. A total of seven newcomers have pitched at least once this season, giving CSUN a near completely different look than previous years.
SCOUTING UC SANTA BARBARA
The Gauchos are off to a 10-2 start in 2025. UCSB is coming off a Big West title last season while the team was picked to finish in first place again this year by the league's head coaches. UC Santa Barbara took two of three from Fresno State last weekend before handing USC an 8-1 defeat this past Tuesday. The Gauchos lead the Big West in the early going in team ERA at 2.64 and in strikeouts at 131 while the team is second in home runs with 18. Jack Holman leads the Gauchos in batting average (.400), runs (18), home runs (6) and RBI (13). On the pitching side, Donovann Jackson has a team-high 21 strikeouts with a 1.19 ERA out of the bullpen while Calvin Proskey sports a 2.51 ERA among the weekend starters.
Series History: UCSB leads CSUN 99-70-3 in the all-time series with four wins in a row. The Gauchos have won five consecutive series over the Matadors as they swept the series last season in Northridge. CSUN's last series win over UCSB took place in 2018 when the Matadors won two of three at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
