CSUN Falls to Fullerton 2-0 in Friday’s Big West Battle
4/11/2025 8:41:00 PM | Softball
FULLERTON, Calif -- CSUN Softball fell to the Cal State Fullerton Titans, 2-0 Friday night at Anderson Family Field. Tiara Westbrook, Gizella Vargas Sandoval and Alexis Chavez accounted for the three hits in the game for the Matadors. Lauryn Carranco took the loss despite pitching a complete game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game started out in a pitcher's duel for both sides. Through three innings there were no runs and only one hit from each team. Carranco got out of a first and third situation with only one out in the third. A nice play from Vargas Sandoval prevented a runner from scoring in the bottom of the third.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Titans got on the board first. Nataly Lozano reached on a single to bring up Fullerton's best bitter, Ava Arce. A two-run home run off the bat of Arce put CSUF on top 2-0. It would be Arce's team-leading eighth long shot of the season.
There would be no further action until the top of the sixth when CSUN looked to get a rally started. With two outs, Westbrook singled to center before Vargas Sandoval walked to put two on for Kylie Galindo. However, Galindo grounded out to second base to end the threat.
NEWS AND NOTES
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"Overall, I think Fullerton got the hit that they needed to win. We left five on, we just didn't get that clutch hit. As conference goes, a lot of games are tight. We can't miss our opportunities. Lauryn did a great job in the circle, especially when we made a couple errors on defense, she was able to get out of tough jams. Again, this is what conference is about, we just have to be better. We have to make adjustments and I know we will."
UP NEXT
The Matadors have a quick turnaround as they will play a doubleheader against this same Fullerton team tomorrow at Anderson Family Field. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., the second game is tentatively scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Both games will be livestreamed on ESPN+.
