HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither side could break through in the scoring column over the first two innings before Calvillo unloaded on a solo homer in the top of the third for a 1-0 Matador lead. Gutierrez allowed no hits through the first two frames, but the Tritons squared the game in the third on a solo homer from Anthony Potestio. UCSD eventually took a 2-1 lead, capitalizing on a Matador error while Emiliano Gonzalez picked up an RBI single with two outs.
In the fifth, CSUN tied the game once more as two singles in the inning set up the scoring chance. The Matadors had runners at the corners when Matthew Pena attempted to steal second base. The attempt drew a throw out to second base where Pena stopped running and got caught in a rundown. This led to Trent Abel scoring from third base with the tying run.
After a rocky third inning, Gutierrez settled in on the mound and pitched a pair of scoreless innings. With the game still tied, the Matadors surged in front in the top of the sixth on consecutive doubles from Xavier Rios and Roberto Gonzalez. A Panganiban single put runners at the corners before Andrew Becker laid down a squeeze bunt to drive in the run from third, making it a 4-2 game.
The Tritons would load the bases with one out in the sixth, however, Gutierrez limited the damage by retiring Patrick Hackworth on a groundout. A run scored on the play, but Gutierrez retired Jayden Lee moments later to keep CSUN in front, 4-3.
Protecting the one-run advantage, Gutierrez had perhaps his best inning in the seventh where he sat down the side in order. The right hander returned to the mound in the eighth but hit the first batter to start the frame. CSUN would turn to the bullpen thereafter as the next batter, Gabe Camacho, followed with a double. Relief pitcher Kody King retired the Alex Leopard on a foul out, but Thomas Maher came through with a two-run single to put the Tritons on top.
UCSD was not done in the eighth inning though as four more hits produced four additional runs. Potestio provided the big blow of the inning, a three-run home run, as UC San Diego scored six times in the eighth and took a 9-4 lead to the ninth.
The Matadors though did not go down quietly in the top of the ninth. Panganiban led off with a triple in the inning before eventually scoring on a two-out RBI single from Jarren Sanderson. However, the deficit was too much to overcome as Triton reliever Spencer Seid retired Abel on a grounder to third for the final out.
NOTES OF THE GAME
- CSUN drops to 8-22 overall and 4-13 in Big West play while UC San Diego improves to 15-18 overall and 6-8 in conference.
