CSUN Opens Second Half of Big West Season at UCSD

GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball makes the trip to La Jolla this weekend to face UC San Diego in a three-game series starting Friday at 6 p.m. The teams will continue the series on Saturday at 2 p.m. before wrapping up the three-game set on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
FOR STARTERS
CSUN (7-21, 3-12 Big West) kicks off the second half of the Big West season this weekend as five total series remain in the regular season. The Matadors will take a break from Big West play next week, playing four non-conference games including a midweek game with Portland on April 15 before playing nationally-ranked Oregon State in a three-game series from April 17-19. The following week, CSUN returns to the road to take on Long Beach State in another Big West series. Despite dropping four of five series in the first half of Big West play, the Matadors are still just 4.5 games back of the top five in the league.
LAST TIME OUT
The Matadors took on Arizona State last Tuesday in a high-scoring affair with the Sun Devils coming out on top 20-11. CSUN would rally from an early 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead in the third inning. However, ASU scored twice in the home half of the third and picked up a six-spot in the fourth along with a five-spot in the fifth to take control. On the offensive side, the Matadors tied a season-high in hits with 16, led by Andrew Gauna's three hits. Colton Boardman came off the bench in the eighth inning to blast a three-run homer and later added a two-run double in the ninth for five RBI.
MATADOR LEADERS
CSUN's offense continues to be led by freshman outfielder Andrew Becker. Through 26 games, Becker has hit safely in 19 games and produced a team-high 11 multi-hit games. In Big West games, Becker has hit a robust .364 with 24 hits and six doubles, while overall he has a .326 batting average, 32 base hits and 18 runs scored. Another freshman, Kyle Panganiban sports a team-best 20 runs scored and 33 base hits to go with three homers and 15 RBI. At the top of the lineup, senior Roberto Gonzalez tops the Matadors in on-base percentage (.471), slugging percentage (.551) and walks (15) while he has batted .321 with three homers and 15 RBI in 24 games. In the middle of the lineup, sophomore Matthew Pena has a team-high six homers and 19 RBI in 21 games.
Following a 10-strikeout game last Saturday against Cal State Fullerton, junior right hander Diego Gutierrez has fanned a team-high 40 batters over a team-leading 43.1 innings. Gutierrez's 10 strikeouts were the most by a Matador since Lucas Braun had 10 versus UC Riverside in 2023.
WHO'S HOT?
Sophomore shortstop Trent Abel now holds the longest hit streak of any Matador this season with 11 as he has improved his season batting average from .125 to .341 entering play this weekend. Abel has multiple hits in three of the 11 games while he has scored six times. Junior Cameron Calvillo has taken the reigns at third base, starting the past seven games and producing a .414 batting average (12-for-29) with seven RBI over that span. Calvillo has not committed an error thus far on the season while he his hitting .302 with 10 RBI. Fellow junior Will Linberg is hitting .368 over the past six games (7-for-19) where he has improved his batting average on the year to .299. Over the last six games, CSUN is hitting .315 as a team and averaging 8.0 runs per game.
SCOUTING UC SAN DIEGO
The Tritons are 14-17 overall with a 5-7 conference record while they come in with losses in nine of its last 10 games. Last weekend, UCSD suffered a three-game sweep by first-place Cal Poly but two of the three games were decided by three runs or fewer. In the Big West standings, the Tritons enter this weekend's series in seventh place. Overall, the Tritons lead the Big West with 44 home runs, led by Michael Crossland who is in a first-place tie in the conference with 10 homers. Crossland is hitting .333 with 27 runs scored and 26 RBI while Gabe Camacho is hitting at a .322 clip to go with five homers and 22 RBI. J.C. Allen holds a slight team lead in RBI with 27 while he has 10 doubles and six homers. On the pitching side, Matthew Dalquist sports a 3-3 record with a 3.80 ERA and 36 strikeouts to lead the rotation.
Series History: CSUN holds a slim 9-7 edge over UC San Diego in the all-time series, but the teams have split the past 12 meetings. The Tritons came away with a series win at CSUN last season, taking two of three games.
