Nine-Run Second Inning Lifts CSUN to 11-2 Win at San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.---CSUN Baseball racked up 14 hits in an 11-2 victory over the University of San Francisco on Wednesday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond. Will Linberg posted a three-hit day with an RBI while Matthew Pena blasted his fifth home run of the season. Six Matador pitchers saw action in the game with Hayden Hall making his first start as a Matador and tossing two shutout innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors would come out swinging as Roberto Gonzalez and Kyle Panganiban collected singles to open up the top of the first. After both stole bases, CSUN pushed across the game's first run on a sacrifice fly from Jarren Sanderson.
CSUN though was far from done. In the top of the second, the Matadors had their biggest scoring output in an inning this season. The inning began with a Trent Abel single before Pena connected for a two-run homer to right. After the next batter was retired, Xavier Rios singled to right field.
Â
Rios' base hit began a string of seven consecutive batters reaching base. Panganiban added to the lead with an RBI double then two consecutive walks, the latter coming from Sanderson, forced in another run. A Linberg single would make it 6-0 while a bases loaded walk drawn by Abel brought in CSUN's seventh run of the afternoon. Cameron Calvillo would cap a nine-run top of the second with a two-run single, stretching the lead to 10-0.
Â
The Matadors later added their 11th run of the game on an RBI groundout off the bat of Angel Cortez, scoring Andrew Gauna in the eighth.
On the mound, Hall gave CSUN two shutout frames to start but would have to work his way through tough innings. Hall stranded two base runners in each of those innings before handing the ball off to the Matador bullpen in the third.
San Francisco would get two runs back in the fourth inning before reliever Jason Davis got out of trouble by retiring TJ Rogert, leaving the bases loaded.
From there, the CSUN bullpen would take control. In the fifth, Blake Ignaciak tossed a shutout inning, pitching around a pair of walks. CSUN picked up a strong effort from Noah Rinehart, who pitched two spotless innings over the sixth and seventh. Freshman Jackson Banuelos made his CSUN debut in the bottom of the eighth where he struck out two batters and only allowed a bunt single.
Another freshman, Nicholas Santivanez took over in the bottom of the ninth and gave CSUN one more shutout inning to wrap up the game. The Dons picked up a leadoff double to start, but Santivanez went on to retire the next three batters to secure the victory.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"We came out offensively aggressive and ran the bases hard. That set the tone for the day. It was great to see bounce back outings from Hayden Hall, Noah Rinehart, Nic Santivanez and Blake Ignaciak. We have it in us to play good baseball. We just need to find the right formula."
UP NEXT
CSUN will return home this weekend for a three-game series with Cal State Fullerton. The opener is set for Friday at 5:30 p.m. Ghizal Hasan will be on the call in an audio broadcast at GoMatadors.com/Radio.
