LA JOLLA, Calif -- CSUN Softball split its doubleheader with UC San Diego but ended up taking the series 2-1. The first game of the doubleheader, CSUN came out on top, 5-2. The second game, the Matadors fell 3-2. In game one, Jerzie Liana and Alexis Chavez each had two RBIs. In game two, Jadyn Nielsen had the lone RBI. Isabella Alonso and Lauryn Carranco both pitched complete games.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Â
GAME ONE
There was no score in the game until the top of the third inning. Larissa Flores led off the third with a walk, and Mikayla Carman doubled to put two runners in scoring position with nobody out. After two consecutive outs, Liana came to the plate. She promptly tripled to left field, easily scoring the two runners in scoring position.Â
Â
In the bottom of the third, UCSD tied the game. After a walk and a single, and both runners advancing on a bad throw, Morgan Eng hit a single to right field, plating the two runners on base and tying the score at two apiece through three innings.
Â
Flash forward to the fifth inning, CSUN took the lead back. Tiara Westbrook singled to start the inning and Jizzell Ruiz was brought in as a pinch-runner. Liana then bunted to the pitcher and the pitcher threw it over the first baseman's head. CSUN had runners on the corners with nobody out. Kylie Galindo grounded out, but the runner advanced to second.Â
Â
The Matadors had two runners in scoring position with one out. Chavez came up with the big hit. She tripled down the right field line as she brought home both runners on base. Her triple made it a 4-2 ball game. With the runner still at third, CSUN was still threatening. A single by Raegan Jackson extended the lead to 5-2 at the end of four and a half innings.
Â
Alonso held it down in the circle. She pitched all seven innings, only allowing two runs and seven hits. She struck out two in the process. Alonso made sure UCSD didn't tally any more runs after the third inning as CSUN took home the victory.
Â
GAME TWO
In game two, it was the Tritons who struck first. After a single to lead off the inning and stolen base, Zara Wasserman singled to left field with two outs and brought the lead runner home. It was 1-0 through one inning.
Â
Lauryn Carranco did a great job in minimizing the damage. Through four innings she only allowed three hits while striking out four.
Â
In the fifth inning however, UCSD added a run. The Tritons reached on error and the runner advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Then, Alexa DeMarse singled up the middle to score the runner from second. Through five innings, UCSD had a 2-0 lead.
Â
In the top of the seventh CSUN started to get things going. With one out, Mia Cortez singled to third base. Larissa Flores re-entered for Cortez on the bases. Carman then singled to right field and Flores scored on an error by the third baseman to put the Matadors on the scoreboard. A sacrifice fly by Sydney Freijanes evened the scoring at two apiece. CSUN was down to its final three outs and managed to tie the game.
Â
In the bottom of the seventh, UCSD tried to get a rally going but fell short as the game went into extra innings.
Â
After CSUN was held scoreless in the top of the eighth, Jaden Hill reached on an error to start the bottom of the eighth. After a flyout to right field, Alexis Jimenez doubled down the left field line to put two runners in scoring position with one out. A wild pitch scored Hill from third as the game ended 3-2 in favor of the Tritons.

NEWS AND NOTES
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"First and foremost, taking a series is huge, especially in conference. Hats off to UC San Diego, I thought their fight was huge. We just had too many mental miscues in game three. One game doesn't define our whole season; we still have a lot to play for. Super proud of Cortez and Freijanes for having those clutch at-bats in the seventh. Two big time seniors came up in a big spot. Now we get ready for our last homestand and we'll continue to get better."

UP NEXT
CSUN returns home next weekend to take on the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos May 2-3 at Matador Diamond. There will be a doubleheader on May 2 with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
