CSUN's Late Rally Falls Short on Senior Day Against Cal Poly

HOW IT HAPPENED
Cal Poly would strike with a two-run first inning on just one hit. After a single to open the first inning, the Mustangs took advantage of a pair of walks to load the bases with two outs. Cal Poly pushed across two runs without a hit as a wild pitch and a fielding error at third made it a 2-0 game.
In the bottom of the first, CSUN would answer back with a two-out rally to cut the deficit in half. An Andrew Becker double that bounced just in front of the right fielder Dylan Kordic kept the inning alive. Moments later, Andrew Gauna came through with a single to right, scoring Becker on a close play at the plate. Will Linberg followed with a single to right as well, but Kordic made a strong throw home to get Gauna at the dish.
The Mustangs would go ahead by two in the top of the second on a two-out homer from Zach Daudet. Once again though, the Matadors had a quick response in the bottom of the second as three came around on three hits. After an Abel single and a Cameron Calvillo walk, Matthew Pena laid down a sacrifice bunt. Matthew Kurata drove in a run on a sacrifice fly before Roberto Gonzalez rifled an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3. Panganiban followed with a two-out hit of his own, an RBI double that was laced down the left-field line to put the Matadors ahead 4-3.
The seesaw game continued in the top of the third when Cal Poly had another two-out rally. Two of the first three batters were retired by Dante Zamudio, but Casey Murray Jr. delivered a two-run homer to left to put the Mustangs back on top. Two more singles produced another Mustang run as Kodic put the Mustangs ahead 6-4 on his single through the right side.
Cal Poly picked up a single tally in the fourth and added two more in the sixth. In that inning, the Mustangs had two singles to begin the sixth while a costly throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt allowed a run to score. Nate Castellon would come away with an RBI single for a 9-4 lead.
After scoring in the first two innings, the Matador bats were quieted by reliever Chris Downs. The left hander entered the game in the bottom of the second where he retired Becker to end the inning. That out would start a string of 11 straight Matadors retired.
Linberg finally ended Downs' streak with a one-out double in the sixth. Two batters later, Calvillo laced an RBI single up the middle to cut the deficit to 9-5.
Not to be outdone, Cal Poly picked up its 10th run of the afternoon in the top of the seventh with yet another two-out hit. Daudet would drive in the run on a double down the right-field line to plate Kordic.
The Matadors trailed 10-5 entering the eighth when the bats came alive. Linberg kicked off the inning with a walk while Abel and Calvillo collected back-to-back singles to load the bases with nobody out. Pena would bring CSUN closer on a sacrifice fly as Rios stepped to the plate next. On the first pitch of the at bat, Rios unloaded on a three-run homer that sailed over the left-field fence to bring the Matadors to within 10-9. CSUN picked up two more hits in the frame but was turned away when Gauna was thrown out at first on a close play.
The Matadors mounted one last rally in the bottom of the ninth as Abel picked up a one-out single. Abel reached second base on a wild pitch, but Pena bounced out to second base to end the ballgame.

ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"I'm proud of the offense for working hard to come back. We set a bad tone with not throwing enough strikes and not playing clean defense. If you look back at yesterday, that's why we won that game. A big portion of that game was defensive play. We were making a lot of good plays and today we couldn't sustain. At the end of the day, we need to mature more to make that next step."
UP NEXT
CSUN will wrap up the 2025 season next weekend at UC Davis for a three-game series. The opener is set for Thursday, May 15 at 6 p.m.
