CSUN Travels to UC Davis to Wrap Up 2025

GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball closes the 2025 season this week with a three-game road series against UC Davis. The opener is set for Thursday at 6 p.m. before continuing on Friday at 6 p.m. and concluding on Saturday at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
FOR STARTERS
The Matadors (14-32, 9-18 Big West play) look to conclude the 2025 season on a winning note this weekend. After getting off a 3-12 start to Big West play, CSUN has gone 6-6 over the last four conference series with a pair of series wins over those weekends. CSUN sits in ninth place in the Big West standings and could finish as high as eighth place with a series sweep of UC Davis.
ABOUT LAST WEEKEND
CSUN dropped a hard-fought series with second-place Cal Poly last weekend at Robert J. Hiegert Field. The Mustangs took game one by a 17-1 score, but the Matadors bounced back with an 11-6 victory in game two as CSUN racked up four home runs. In the rubber game, Cal Poly led by five runs before CSUN roared back to trim the deficit to one in the eighth on a three-run homer from Xavier Rios, however, the Mustangs held on for a 10-9 victory to take the series.
Senior Roberto Gonzalez had a stellar series against the Mustangs, hitting .533 at the plate (8-for-15) while scoring three times, driving in three runs and collecting a homer. Other top hitters in the series include junior Will Linberg who hit .500 (6-for-12) with three RBI and his first career home run while senior Andrew Gauna homered and drove in two runs to go with a .462 average at the plate (6-for-13). On the pitching side, Ryan Halamicek pitched in two games out of the bullpen, tossing four innings with a save and Diego Gutierrez collected his third victory of the season after striking out six batters and allowing five runs in 5.2 innings.
CSUN IN THE BIG WEST
Several Matadors enter the final series of the season ranked in the top-10 in several categories in the Big West. Senior Roberto Gonzalez ranks first in the Big West in triples (8) along with third in OPS (1.111) and on base percentage (.481), fourth in batting average (.370) and sixth in slugging percentage (.630). Freshman Kyle Panganiban, CSUN's hit leader with 62, checks in at fifth place on the conference's doubles list (15) and at 10th place in stolen bases (10). Senior Andrew Gauna, who tops CSUN with eight homers, is also ranked seventh in the Big West in slugging percentage (.606) and ninth in OPS (1.006). As a team, CSUN is ranked third overall in the Big West in stolen bases (61 and triples (14) along with fifth in homers (48) and in fielding percentage (.973).
STREAKING AT THE PLATE
Roberto Gonzalez enters his final series with CSUN on a 20-game on base streak, the most by a Matador this season while he has hit safely in seven in a row. Overall, Gonzalez has reached base safely in 40 of 42 games this season. Andrew Gauna has tied CSUN's longest hit streak of the season at 15. Over Gauna's 15-game hit streak, he has improved his season batting average from .293 to .339 while he has driven in 17 runs. Kyle Panganiban has a 14-game hit streak as well entering play this weekend, batting .387 over that span. In Big West action, Panganiban has hit safely in 23 of 27 league contests.
SCOUTING UC DAVIS
The Aggies are 25-27 overall and 11-16 in Big West play. UC Davis took two of three games from UC San Diego last weekend while the team is coming off a 6-2 win over Utah Tech this past Tuesday. As a team, the Aggies rank second in the Big West in fielding percentage (.980) and fourth in earned run average (4.63). Bryan Green, Thursday's starter against CSUN, ranks second in the Big West and 22nd in the nation in ERA (2.42) to go with a 3-4 record and 66 strikeouts. Braydon Wooldridge tops the Aggies with a .299 batting average while he has two homers and 23 RBI. Nick Leehey has a team-best five homers and 25 RBI to go with a .280 batting average.
Series History: CSUN holds a slim 30-29 edge over UC Davis in the all-time series. The Matadors have won the last six series with the Aggies, but the teams have played a pair of close series over the past two seasons with CSUN taking two of three games each time.
