HOW IT HAPPENED
Â
UCR though had an answer in the top of the second as three straight singles quickly loaded the base with none out. CSUN's Dante Zamudio would retire the next two batters on fly outs, but the tying runs scored on sacrifice flies.
The Matadors would have a quick response in the home half of the second, behind two-out hitting. After Boardman led off with a single, a sacrifice bunt put the go-ahead run into scoring position. Roberto Gonzalez kept the inning alive with a two-out walk before Panganiban laced a 0-2 pitch into left field for an RBI double. CSUN scored for a third straight inning in the bottom of the third when Boardman stroked a two-out single to left center to bring home Jarren Sanderson, who doubled with one out.
The 4-2 lead though was quickly cut to one in the top of the fourth. Blake Ignaciak would be first out of the CSUN bullpen in the fourth, inheriting a first and third situation with nobody out. A wild pitch allowed UCR to pull to within 4-3, but Ignaciak went on to induce a pair of groundouts and a strikeout of Robert Pitts to keep CSUN ahead.
The score remained 4-3 until the bottom of the fifth when the Matador bats came alive again. Singles from Gauna and Will Linberg opened the inning while a Trent Abel sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. Moments later, Boardman rifled a single to right center, plating two more CSUN runs.
Ignaciak gave the Matadors a big lift out of the bullpen, working a shutout top of the fifth and striking out a pair of batters in the process. In the sixth though, he got into trouble with the first two batters reaching, Logan Miller entered the fray and quickly stymied the UCR uprising by retiring three straight batters including striking out the last two looking.
Miller would be dominant in his outing, retiring all nine batters he faced, highlighted by back-to-back 1-2-3 frames in protecting the lead.
CSUN collected an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single from Becker to go up 7-3, but the Highlanders got that run back to start the ninth on a solo homer from David Whittle.
Ryan Halamicek, who tossed 3.1 shutout innings on Saturday, later entered the game in the ninth inning with the tying run on deck and nobody out. On just the second pitch of his stint on the mound, Halamicek induced a 4-3 double play off the bat of Pitts. Halamicek then went on to fan Andrew Rivas for the final out of the game.

ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"It started with being aggressive offensively, which set the tone. For me, the biggest difference in the game was the stops that we had on the mound. Blake Ignaciak came in and minimized the inning with runners on base and they only scoring one. And with runners on base, Logan Miller came in and got a zero with first and second and nobody out. Then, Halamicek came in to close it out. To me, those were the three innings where if you don't minimize, which has been our problem, maybe it's a different score. Also, Colton Boardman came up big for us with his defensive play and driving in runs. Gauna came up clutch, Becker, K.P. (Panganiban) they all drove in key runs."
UP NEXT
CSUN will make a day trip to San Diego State on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
