NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball makes the midweek trip to San Diego State on Tuesday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Live stats will be available for the non-conference game.
REGULAR SEASON COMING TO A CLOSE
The Matadors play their penultimate midweek game of the season this week at San Diego State before getting back to Big West play this weekend. CSUN is set to host Cal Poly in its final home series of the season from May 9-11 while next week, the Matadors close the regular season with a midweek test at USC on May 13 and a three-game series at UC Davis from May 15-17.
ABOUT LAST WEEKEND
CSUN secured its second straight series win by taking two of three from UC Riverside at Robert J. Hiegert Field. In the opener, Jon Mocherman tossed five shutout innings and Roberto Gonzalez drove in three runs, as the Matadors blanked UC Riverside 11-0. The Highlanders battled back with a 3-1 win in game two despite CSUN leading in the hit category by an 8-4 margin. The teams played the rubber match on Sunday with the Matadors pulling out a 7-4 win behind a 16-hit attack and led by Colton Boardman's career-high four hits.
The Matador pitching staff limited the Highlanders to a team .183 batting average while the bullpen gave up just one run in three-game series. Ryan Halamicek tossed 4.1 shutout innings in relief, striking out five and picking up his first save of the season on Sunday. Jason Davis and Logan Miller each tossed three shutout frames and Blake Ignaciak worked two shutout innings on Sunday to collect his first win of the season.
GONZALEZ TIES TRIPLES RECORD
Senior outfielder Roberto Gonzalez has enjoyed a breakout 2025 season for the Matadors. Gonzalez, who leads CSUN in batting this year at a .358 clip, would tie the Matadors' Division I triples record in the three-game series with UC Riverside. With his seventh triple of the year, Gonzalez matched the CSUN D-1 record first established by Adam Kennedy in 1995 and matched by C.J. Belanger in 2010. Overall in CSUN history, two players have recorded more triples in the program's Division II era as Jerry Libman had nine in 1962 and Jason Thompson had eight in 1975. In the Matador baseball record book, Gonzalez's seven triples are also tied for the 10th-most on the career list.
CSUN IN THE BIG WEST
In addition to leading CSUN, Gonzalez tops the Big West and is ranked third in the nation with his seven triples. Gonzalez is also second in the conference in OPS (1.089) along with fifth in slugging percentage (.604), sixth in batting average (.358) and tied for 11th in stolen bases (9). Senior Andrew Gauna is sixth in the Big West in slugging (.598) and tied for 13th in home runs (7). On the pitching side, Diego Gutierrez is up to eighth place in the conference in strikeouts (65). As a team, CSUN is ranked third in the Big West in stolen bases (56) and fifth in home runs (43).
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE
The Aztecs are 15-34 on the season along with 10-14 in the Mountain West. San Diego State suffered a three-game sweep to New Mexico over the weekend while the team has lost its last seven games. As a team, the Aztecs hit at a .277 clip on the season. Nevan Noonan leads the team in batting (.338), runs (38), hits (65), doubles (15), homers (5) and RBI (38) while Daniel Arambula is hitting .317 with three homers and 33 RBI. In the bullpen, Peyton Rodgers has three saves with a 5.23 ERA and 41 strikeouts.
Series History: SDSU leads CSUN 47-44 in the all-time series, but the Matadors have won the last four meetings. Last season, CSUN swept the season series from the Aztecs by 7-5 and 2-0 scores.
