NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN head baseball coach Eddie Cornejo has announced additions to the 2026 coaching staff including Paul Koss as pitching coach, Broc Mortensen as director of player development and Nick Alfonso as director of baseball operations.Â
Koss previously served as an assistant coach at California Baptist last season where he worked with the team's pitchers and catchers. He helped lead the Lancers to a school record in strikeouts (496), which topped the WAC. Prior to CBU, Koss spent seven seasons with Colorado Christian University including five seasons as head coach of the program from 2019-24, while during his tenure, he would lead the team to the program's first-ever appearances in the conference tournament (2021 and 2023) and the highest conference win percentage in school history.
Originally from Orange, Koss competed at USC from 2004-07, where he finished second in Trojan history in career saves (36) and appearances (101), as well as second in single-season saves (16). In 2006, he was selected as a Cape Cod League All-Star. Drafted in the 11th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2007, Koss played six years of professional baseball, reaching the Double-A level and making the California League All-Star team in 2008.
"Paul brings a cerebral and methodical approach to the game," said Cornejo. "He's a culture builder and connects well with student-athletes that is needed in our program."
Mortensen began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Cuesta College where he spent two seasons from 2024-25. He would help Cuesta advance to the 3C2A Super Regionals in each of his two years with the program.
Â
Originally from Ventura, Mortensen had an exceptional college baseball playing career at UC Santa Barbara where he tied the Gaucho career home record with 42 over three seasons from 2021-23. An All-Big West Second Team selection in 2022, Mortensen led the conference in homers twice with a career-best 16 recorded as a junior. Mortensen would also help lead UCSB to the NCAA Regionals twice in his career while he was a member of the Gauchos' Big West title run in 2022.Â
"Broc worked for Bob Miller at Cuesta College, one of the most respected junior college coaches in the country," said Cornejo. "He will add tremendous value to our coaching staff."
Alfonso joins the Matadors after spending last season as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Los Angeles Mission College. With the Eagles, Alfonso worked with the team's pitchers, helping mentor and guide student-athletes to the next level of college baseball. He also spent Fall 2024 as a pitching coach for the Cincinnati Reds Scout Team where he coached elite high school pitchers in the Southern California area and worked alongside MLB scouts to develop pro-level talent.Â
Â
Alfonso previously was the pitching coach at Burbank High School from 2020-24 while he would spend the 2022 Summer as an assistant at Crespi High School. In addition, Alfonso possesses experience coaching summer baseball, most recently with Team Philippines, the CCL Summer Team in 2025. He also served as pitching coach in 2024 with the Ventura County Bucs of the California Sunset Collegiate League.Â
Â
"Nick is a hard-working and dedicated person eager to begin his Division I career at CSUN," said Cornejo.
