NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer kicked off the fall season with a 2-1 victory over Trinity Western University in an exhibition match on Thursday at Matador Soccer Field. Cailey Jackson and Yoshi Rubalcaba provided the scoring on the night with a goal apiece while Riley Liebsack and Kennedy Williams combined to record four saves in goal. The teams played nearly 130 minutes of soccer in the exhibition match.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After withstanding an early shot on goal to open the match, CSUN went on the attack and produced the game's first goal at the 10-minute mark. Following a free kick, Yasmin Azar collected the ball off a deflection and sent a low shot that was saved at the goal. Jackson though picked up the rebound and found the back of the net on a right-footed shot for a 1-0 lead.Â
The lead though was short-lived as the Spartans capitalized on a CSUN turnover in its last third of the field, leading to a Luciana Andrews goal that evened the match in the 13th minute.Â
CSUN would answer just minutes later, scoring on a free kick from Rubalcava straight away. The Matador senior took a shot just a few yards above the box and found the net on a high shot that sailed above the defense for a 2-1 lead.Â
After the early goals, CSUN turned to its defense the rest of the way. Liebsack made her second save of the night late in the first period off the foot of Lianna Holz while Williams made two timely stops, thwarting attempts from Holz and Kya Thackwray, in the second period.Â
In the final period of action, CSUN outshot Trinity Western 8-1 with a flurry of shots nearly hitting the net. Ariana Lopez-Angel would have her shot saved in the 114th minute while Rubalcava was just off target on attempts from near the 18-yard mark.Â
