NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Julia Bazylevych and Leah Miller each had double figures in kills, but CSUN women's volleyball dropped a four-set decision to visiting Lipscomb, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 25-23, in a non-conference match on Saturday at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
The Matadors (5-3) were paced by Bazylevych's team-high 16 kills (.279) and four blocks, while Miller added 15 kills while hitting .400 on 25 attacks.
CSUN out-hit the Bison .283 (46-14-113) to .243 (58-24-140) and also held a 9-5 edge in total blocks and a 46-44 edge in team digs.
Setter Jan Marie Duhaylungsod made her second start of the season at setter and posted 25 assists and two digs, while junior Taylor Dunlap added 14 and a pair of digs. Libero Paige Sentes led all players with 17 digs and combined with Saniyah Sobers for a perfect 1.000 serve-receive percentage on 25 chances. Redshirt freshman Kyleigh Moore made her Matador debut and added six kills, five digs, one ace, and one block.
After Lipscomb (5-3) controlled the opening set behind outside hitter Courtney Jones — who finished with a match-high 20 kills — CSUN responded in the second. The Matadors hit nearly .300 and used a pair of kills from Miller and a block by Bazylevych to close out a 25-19 win and even the match at one set apiece.
The third set swung back and forth, with the score tied nine times. CSUN trailed 23-21 before a kill from Moore and a service ace by Tatiana Turgeon pulled the Matadors within one. But the Bisons responded with consecutive kills to escape 25-22.
In the fourth, CSUN pushed Lipscomb to the brink. Bazylevych's late kill tied the score at 22, and Miller answered with another swing to keep the Matadors within striking distance. Lipscomb, however, managed the final two points, sealing the set 25-23 and the match.
NOTES
- Lipscomb hands CSUN its first home loss of the season, as the Matadors slip to 3-1 at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
- CSUN also dropped its first four-set match of the season after winning its first four of the season.
HEAD COACH AQUILES MONTOYA SAID
"It was an unfortunate match and an opportunity lost for us. We have to keep pushing when we have leads and not allow teams to think they have a chance. Lipscomb is used to winning and handles those tight situations better than we do right now. With continued experience and perseverance, we believe this roster can make those changes. Learning to win consistently is a skill, even with a talented group, and we're growing through that right now."
UP NEXT
