NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (5-5-2, 1-1-1 Big West) pulled off a statement 3-1 win over the Cal State Fullerton Titans, Saturday night at Matador Soccer Field. Dave-Ryan Tankou, Kayvon Monfared, Francisco Garibay all tallied goals for CSUN in the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Cal State Fullerton struck first in the 10th minute when Jose de la Torre scored on a free kick from just outside the penalty area, giving the Titans a 1-0 lead. It was de la Torre's third goal of the season.

Just as Fullerton thought it was in control, CSUN countered with a goal of its own not even a minute later. Jack Cameron in his third career start had the ball deep in Fullerton's territory on the left side. He placed a ball to the right side of the box that was deflected off the head of a Titan defender, right into the attacking space of Tankou. The freshman from Woodland Hills struck with his right foot into the high left side of the goal, tying the game at one apiece.

Both teams went back and forth in the rest of the half, but CSUN had the advantage in possession. The teams remained tied through halftime despite CSUN generating 10 shots.
The Matadors continued to apply pressure after the break, putting Cal State Fullerton goalkeeper Asger Hemmer to work with five second-half saves.

The game was a classic Big West showdown with high-powered defense on both sides. It took until the 81st minute, but the Matadors broke the tie when Jorge Solorzano made a long run up the field before finding Monfared inside the box. Monfared finished with his right foot to give the Matadors a 2-1 lead. The senior from Anaheim Hills netted his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

With all the momentum on the Matadors' side, CSUN added an insurance goal in the 87th minute. Monfared, who just scored the go-ahead goal, played the role of facilitator as he delivered a flick to the trailing runner in Garibay. Garibay tallied his second goal of the season after he tapped the pass past the diving Titan goalkeeper, putting the game out of reach at 3-1.
The Matadors played good defense for the rest of the game, allowing no shots in the game's closing minutes.

ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH TERRY DAVILA
"We have a lot of perseverance. We just kept going and relying on our game plan. Kayvon scored a big time goal tonight. Any Big West goal is a good one.
[On goalkeeper Bryan Castaneda stepping up] He's a solid goalkeeper. His positioning is excellent and he has great reactions. We have two outstanding goalkeepers, and when Dorian went down, Bryan took his opportunity and he ran with it."
