CSUN Keeps Unbeaten Streak Alive with 0-0 Draw with CBU

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer picked up a well-earned shutout as the Matadors played to a 0-0 draw with California Baptist on Saturday at Matador Soccer Field. Senior goalkeeper Hayden Mauldin earned the clean sheet and finished with four saves.Â
With the result, the Matadors are now unbeaten over their last six matches.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Facing a CBU team with the least number of goals surrendered this season, the Matadors would do their best to breakthrough on the offensive end on Saturday. CSUN picked up three shots on goal over the first 10-plus minutes of action, forcing goalkeeper Mikayla O'Brien to be active between the pipes. On the flip side, the Lancers nearly came away with an early goal as Anja Jestrovic hit the crossbar from the left side. Mauldin would be on her game defensively for CSUN, earning three of her four saves in the first half alone. Off the bench, Alena Ramirez and Malea Johnson each gave the Matadors energy with both putting shots on frame in the first period. CSUN finished the half with an 11-7 edge in shots as the game remained scoreless at the break.Â
In the second half, the Lancers earned five corner kicks, but the Matador defense held firm each time. The two sides would be even in the shot department in the half as the teams totaled seven shots apiece with each goalkeeper recording a save. Perhaps, the Matadors' best look of the night came in the 86th minute of action. After a goal kick, Mauldin found a streaking Jordyn Canister with a high arching pass. With no defender in front of her, Canister would get a touch on the ball and go one-on-on with goalkeeper Mikayla O'Brien, but her right-footed shot from the right wing of the box went high, hitting the crossbar. The Lancers countered with two last looks at the net over the final four-plus minutes of play with each attempt sailing wide of the frame.Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"Proud of the team for getting one point and getting the draw. CBU is a very good team, well-coached and organized. They're a difficult team to play against. At the end of the day, we would have wanted three points and the win, but when you get a draw and one point in the Big West, you're doing a fantastic job. We haven't had a shutout in a while, very happy to get a clean sheet. Overall, to get the result in the next game, we have to put away our chances. We're having our opportunities. We had 18 shots with six on goal, they had 14 shots and four on goal, so we had the advantage there. We have to be a little bit more clinical and a little more disciplined with the quality of the shots and the technical execution, and hopefully the ball will get in the back of the net the next time."Â
